Understanding Disability Parking Permits in Kogarah Bay
In Kogarah Bay, individuals with disabilities affecting mobility can apply for a Mobility Parking Scheme permit designed to provide essential access to dedicated car spaces. There are two main categories: the individual permit, a blue card valid for five years, and the temporary permit, a red card valid for up to six months. The blue card suits permanent disabilities, while the red card supports conditions like leg injuries or temporary mobility challenges. To apply, residents can visit a local Service Centre, download the application form, or apply online through Service NSW. Eligibility criteria are outlined by Sutherland Shire Council, ensuring fair access for those who need it most.
The application process involves obtaining a medical certificate from your doctor or specialist confirming your eligibility. This certificate is essential for both initial applications and renewals, especially if your situation has changed. First-time applicants or those renewing after six months may need a medical assessment for fitness to drive. Your doctor can submit this assessment online for convenience, or you can request a paper copy from a local service centre on President Avenue. By following these straightforward steps, you can secure your disability parking permit and access the necessary spaces throughout the area.
Navigating Regulations and Displaying Your Permit Correctly

Designated accessible bays are wider than standard spots, typically measuring at least 3.2 meters, providing space for wheelchairs and mobility aids. Misuse of these spaces can result in hefty fines of up to $550, as local authorities actively enforce these rules to ensure accessibility for those genuinely in need. Sutherland Shire Council takes this responsibility seriously. Always keep your permit visible on your dashboard when parking in designated bays.
You may need to supply a photo for your permit unless you qualify for a photo exemption due to your condition. This exemption can be requested before your application submission. For detailed guidelines on eligibility and application steps, visit the NSW mobility parking permits website.
