How to Apply for Your Permit in Riverside
Applying for a disability parking permit in Riverside involves several important steps that residents should understand. First, individuals must download the application form and gather necessary documentation, including medical certification to confirm eligibility. The application process typically takes around ten weeks, so it's wise to plan ahead if you need a permit for upcoming appointments at Royal Hobart Hospital or nearby Clarence Medical Centre on Campbell Street.
One critical requirement is the GP assessment, which establishes the need for a permit based on your specific circumstances. This ensures that accessible parking spaces are allocated fairly and align with criteria set by local authorities. Understanding how these processes work can streamline your experience significantly. Medical professionals will evaluate your mobility needs and provide the documentation required for approval. Once approved, your permit will be valid for two years from the date of issue, after which you'll need to reapply if your circumstances remain unchanged.
Where to Find Accessible Parking Spaces in Riverside
Accessible parking bays in Riverside are strategically placed near essential landmarks, making it easier for residents and visitors to access vital services. The Riverside Shopping Centre features several designated car spaces close to the entrance, facilitating easy access to shops for individuals with mobility challenges. Similarly, Royal Hobart Hospital on Campbell Street has ample disability parking bays ensuring that patients and visitors can reach the facility without hassle. The Riverside Council offices on Main Street are also equipped with accessible vehicle parking lots for community services and public meetings.
Understanding the regulations surrounding these spaces is crucial. If a sign shows a limit of fewer than 30 minutes, you may park for a maximum of 30 minutes. If the limit is between 30 minutes and one hour, the allowance increases to two hours. For signs indicating one hour or longer, you can park for twice the indicated time. Misuse of these designated parking permits can lead to fines up to $100, so it's essential to follow all posted signage carefully and display your permit correctly while parked.
Regulations and Compliance for Permit Holders

Permits allow parking in designated zones indicated by clear signage near local medical facilities and shopping precincts. As a community resource, it's vital to keep your permit current and display it properly at all times. The permit is non-transferable and must be carried by the person for whom it was issued or their caregiver when using the accessible parking spaces.
Care organisations can also apply for permits for vehicles transporting members of the Transport Access Scheme. These organisational permits follow the same two-year validity period and $50 fee structure as individual permits. When parking in designated bays, always ensure your permit is visible on your dashboard and that you're not exceeding the time limit specified on the parking sign.
