What to Do When Byron Bay’s Free Bays Disappear
Byron Bay’s free parking is hardest to secure when the town centre, beaches and surrounding reserves are busy. The Time Limits and Permits That Control Free Parking in Byron
Byron Bay’s free parking spaces still carry the time limits shown on local signs and the council parking map. Byron Shire Council states that time limits apply to all vehicles, and a vehicle must be moved when the maximum permitted time has been reached. PayStay sessions do not extend a signed limit, so moving the vehicle to a new parking area is required before parking beyond a limit (Byron Shire Council).
Byron Bay school staff can apply for an interim permit for exemptions in specific surrounding streets, so those exemptions are not general free parking. Mobility permit holders can park free in Byron Shire pay parking areas (Byron Shire Council).
Parking Penalties and Appeals in Byron Shire
Byron Shire Council does not set its own parking-fine amounts: parking fines are set by the NSW Ministry and NSW Roads and Maritime Services. A parking infringement cannot be withdrawn by Council once it has been issued or commenced, so an overstay or other illegal parking infringement must be dealt with through the state process (Byron Shire Council).
Revenue NSW handles payment and contests for Byron parking fines. Byron Shire Council directs drivers to the appeals procedure on the reverse of the notice or to Revenue NSW for the contest process.
