Free Parking Streets and Times in Cairns City
Cairns City has free centre-median parking, with a two-hour limit from 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays and from 8.30am to 2pm on Saturdays. Lake Street, Abbotts Street, Grafton Street and Aplin Street are also identified as locations with free parking, although the applicable signs and bay markings determine the permitted stay (cairns-tours.com).
Council’s Cairns City parking is free outside the regulated hours, on public holidays, and where an on-street space has no posted time limit. A free bay is therefore most useful for an evening, Sunday or public-holiday visit, provided the space is not reserved for loading, buses, taxis or disability parking.
Cairns City Time Limits, Permits and Enforcement Hours
Cairns Regional Council applies on-street time limits and fees between 8.30am and 6pm on weekdays and between 8.30am and 2pm on Saturdays. Outside those hours, posted time limits do not apply to ordinary parking, but disability parking, loading, bus and taxi-zone rules continue to apply (Cairns Regional Council).
Cairns City signs can set different limits from one hour up to four hours in CBD and other high-use areas, so a free stay depends on the individual street or bay. Council says parking hours and locations vary at other Cairns sites, with maps showing time limits, fees and off-street locations (Cairns Regional Council). A disability parking permit does not turn every bay into unrestricted parking because disability-space rules remain in force.
What to Use When Cairns City Free Bays Fill
Free spaces are hardest to secure during busy shopping periods and city events, when short-stay bays turn over quickly. The Lake Street car park is a named lower-cost council alternative at $1.50 an hour, capped at $10 for all-day parking.
Other applicable council off-street car parks charge $2.40 an hour and cap all-day parking at $6, while Grafton Street car park has a $6.50 all-day cap (Cairns Regional Council). Hartley Street car park at 2-18 Hartley Street is a 24-hour Secure Parking facility with all-day parking from $9, suited to drivers who need a central space beyond the free street-parking windows (Secure Parking).
Parksy Parking Near Cairns City CBD
Parksy lists a 24/7 priced space at 65 Sheridan Street, 100 metres away, at $4 an hour. The Sheridan Street option suits drivers who want the shortest listed walk and hourly flexibility. A 24/7 space at 22 Sheridan Street is 200 metres away and costs $7 a day, making it better for a longer Cairns City visit.
At 270 metres, the priced private parking space in Cairns City costs $7 a day. Secure 24/7 covered parking in Cairns Central is 280 metres away at $4 an hour, while the 69 Spence Street space is 350 metres away at $6 a day. A priced parking lot 380 metres away also costs $6 a day. The daily options suit workers and full-day visitors when free bays have reached their time limit.
Cairns City Parking Fines and Late-Payment Costs
Cairns Regional Council issues parking infringements when a vehicle exceeds the signed limit or breaches a parking restriction.
Cairns Regional Council adds a standard late fee of $18.50 to an unpaid parking fine, with the late fee potentially higher when the vehicle is registered in another state or territory (Cairns Regional Council). The council provides online payment for parking fines, and a driver who disputes an infringement can use the council’s infringement process rather than ignoring the notice.
