Glenelg busy periods and lower-cost parking choices
Free parking around Jetty Road and the foreshore is most difficult during school holidays, cinema visits and major precinct activity. Marina Pier Car Park at 3 Chappell Drive offers an all-day rate from $14, with entry and exit through Chappell Drive. The Secure Parking facility operates 24 hours on weekdays, weekends and public holidays, so it is a practical named alternative when free spaces have filled (Secure Parking).
The car park is near Marina Pier, Holdfast Shores, Marina Markets, Jetty Road and Glenelg beach, placing paid parking within the same visitor precinct (Secure Parking).
Glenelg time limits, permits and disability concessions
Holdfast Bay applies time limits to some council-owned streets and car parks to maintain turnover for retailers and visitors. The Glenelg three-hour parking limit zone operates seven days a week from 9am to 6pm, and a resident permit applies to that zone rather than creating general free parking for other drivers (City of Holdfast Bay).
A disability parking permit allows parking in signed disability spaces and provides extra time in other council parking areas. A limit below 30 minutes becomes a maximum of 30 minutes; a limit above 30 minutes but below one hour becomes two hours; and a limit above one hour is doubled. The permit holder must be the driver or a passenger, and the current permit must be displayed in the front window (City of Holdfast Bay).
In council 24P fee-paying areas, a disability permit holder may park for 90 minutes without paying. A TPI permit is different: it allows double the signed time in timed areas, but a ticket remains required in fee-paying areas (City of Holdfast Bay).
Parking fines and expiation payments in Glenelg
Holdfast Bay council officers may issue parking fines, called expiation notices, when a vehicle is parked illegally under the Australian Road Rules.
The amount of a Glenelg parking expiation depends on the specific offence and is recorded on the issued notice.
Drivers can pay through the Holdfast Bay parking-fine process using the expiation number on the notice. The notice is also the document to use when pursuing the authority’s review or challenge process, while enforcement responsibility remains with the driver who left the vehicle in the restricted space.
