Kew parking choices when free bays fill
Free timed bays in Kew are most useful for short errands because council says time limits are intended to turn spaces over according to the needs of each location (boroondara.vic.gov.au). Kew Gardens also warns that parking at Kew is limited and that spaces in its car park are first come, first served (kew.org). A visit to Kew Gardens therefore places pressure on the limited on-site supply, particularly when arriving after other visitors.
Kew signs, sensors and permit restrictions
A vehicle’s time starts as soon as it enters the parking bay, so arriving before a restriction begins does not create a new unrestricted period. A timed bay can therefore remain free to use while still requiring departure within the signed limit.
Kew parking may also be permitted or metered rather than generally available. A permit condition applies to the permit category shown on the sign, so a resident-permit space is not a free option for a visitor without that permit. Boroondara monitors parking through parking sensors and parking inspectors. Drivers can pay at nearby ticket machines or use PayStay for metered parking, but payment does not remove a signed maximum stay.
Parking infringement enforcement in Kew
The sensors measure the exact time a vehicle enters and leaves a parking space, allowing the council to measure occupation against the time shown on the parking sign. The council states that sensors do not change parking rules or time limits, so an infringement can arise from occupying a bay beyond its signed conditions even where the bay itself is not metered.
The applicable consequence depends on the restriction recorded for the vehicle, including the signed time limit, permit condition or metered requirement.
