Understanding College Station's Permit Categories
College Station offers several distinct parking permit types designed for different needs. Resident permits provide affordable access to designated lots near essential locations like Texas A&M University and the Northgate Entertainment District. Students, faculty, and staff each have tailored permit options with varying costs and lot assignments based on their university affiliation. The city also issues visitor parking permits for short-term guests, making it simple for friends and family to visit without worrying about hourly meter fees.
Beyond standard resident and student permits, College Station accommodates business owners, contractors, and event attendees. Trade permits enable service providers to work throughout the city without facing parking violations or fines. Event permits handle the surge of traffic during Texas A&M football games at Kyle Field or concerts at Reed Arena. Understanding which permit category matches your situation ensures you'll secure appropriate parking without overpaying. Most permits cost between $100–$200 annually for residents, though temporary options are significantly cheaper.
Where to Apply and What Documentation You'll Need
The Texas A&M Transportation Services office handles most permit applications for students and university-affiliated individuals. You can apply online through their registration portal or visit the office in person at their main campus location. Required documents typically include your vehicle's license plate number, current vehicle registration, and proof of residency or university status. Processing usually takes three to five business days if all paperwork is complete and accurate.
Non-university residents should contact the City of College Station's Public Services Department, located downtown on Church Street. They manage permits for general residents, businesses, and visitor passes throughout residential neighborhoods. Payment can be made online, by mail, or in person using credit cards or checks. Early application is wise during peak seasons, spring semester registration often fills quickly, particularly for premium lot locations near campus. For detailed guidance on the application process, visit the Texas A&M parking permit portal to confirm current deadlines and fees.
Tradesperson and Temporary Permit Options
College Station recognizes that contractors, delivery services, and maintenance workers need flexible temporary parking solutions. Day permits for tradespeople are available through both the city and Texas A&M, allowing workers to park in otherwise restricted zones while performing their duties. These permits typically cost $15–$25 per day and can be obtained through a simple online request or by calling the respective department. The permits must display your vehicle information and work site address to remain valid.
Short-term visitor permits work similarly, offering guests and family members hassle-free parking during their stay. A guest parking pass usually grants seven to fourteen days of unrestricted parking in residential permit zones. This is particularly useful during football season when thousands of fans converge on College Station. You can request these passes through your landlord, homeowners association, or directly from the city if you're a property owner. Residential neighborhoods like Southside and Old Town also have permit zones, though these areas tend to have more available spaces and lower fees.

On-campus residents receive free or heavily subsidized permits for nearby lots, while off-campus students may pay more for shuttle-served lots further from campus. Faculty and staff permits grant access to designated lots near their academic buildings or offices. Each zone has specific restrictions.
