Meter hoods, usually found in busy areas like Nelson Bay, cover parking meters to signify that they are out of service, allowing free parking in those spots temporarily. No Parking vs No Stopping Distinctions
Distinguishing between "No Parking," "No Standing," and "No Stopping" signs is essential for avoiding unnecessary fines while navigating Port Stephens. A "No Parking" sign means you cannot leave your vehicle unattended but may stop for up to two minutes for passenger drop-offs or loading, provided you stay within three meters of your vehicle. In contrast, a no stopping sign prohibits stopping altogether in the direction indicated, except in emergencies. These rules help keep thoroughfares, such as those near the Salamander Bay Shopping Centre and Nelson Bay Road, clear for traffic flow.
It's worth noting that "No Standing" signs, which previously allowed brief stops, have been phased out in NSW, simplifying the regulations for drivers. Multi-Panel Parking Signs and Restrictions

This can lead to unnecessary delays and vehicle impounding, so always check the hours displayed on the signs before leaving your car.
Additionally, emergency lane markers are essential for ensuring the safety of all road users. Parking near these markers, often found close to hospitals like Tomaree Hospital and major intersections, is strictly prohibited.
