To recover a towed vehicle from the local impound facility, owners must first locate the specific towing company responsible for the removal. Fees for recovery can vary, typically starting around $200 AUD, not including potential daily storage charges. Depending on the circumstances, additional fines may also apply. What Happens When Your Vehicle Gets Towed
Discovering your car is gone from Mitchell Park is a gut-wrenching moment. The panic hits fast. Whether you were parked near Southland Shopping Centre or along Bay Road, a towed vehicle means immediate stress and financial strain. Towing fees typically range from $199 to $400 depending on the situation, and that's before storage charges kick in.
Act swiftly when you realize your vehicle is missing. The City of Port Phillip advises calling 134 869 to confirm your car's status and location. You'll need your driver's license and payment method ready. Don't delay. Every hour your car sits in an impound yard, storage fees accumulate. Many residents around Mitchell Park find themselves caught off guard by clearway zone rules, which are strictly enforced to maintain traffic flow during peak hours on major roads.
Understanding Impound Yards and Recovery
Mitchell Park vehicles typically end up at the impound yard located at 34 Cromwell Street in Collingwood, roughly 8 kilometers away. The facility operates Monday to Friday from 6:30 AM to 9 PM, and Saturdays from 8 AM to 1 PM. Sundays and public holidays? Closed. This matters if you need your car urgently. Call ahead to confirm your vehicle is there before making the drive across Melbourne.
When you arrive for vehicle recovery, bring proof of ownership and your driver's license. You'll face a release fee (typically $300) plus daily storage charges around $50 per day. Payment options include credit card at the yard or electronic funds transfer. The Port Phillip Council recommends understanding these costs upfront. For comprehensive details on towing regulations and procedures, consult the City of Melbourne towing guide. If you fail to collect within 14 days, your car may be moved to an overflow yard, complicating retrieval further.
Towing Fees and Storage Charges Explained
The financial hit of a towed vehicle extends beyond the initial release fee. Your $300 towing charge is just the beginning. Storage fees of approximately $50 per day add up quickly, after just one week, you're looking at $650 in total costs. For vehicles towed from clearway zones during peak hours, these fees apply immediately when your car arrives at the impound yard on Cromwell Street.
Payment methods are straightforward but timing is critical. The impound facility accepts credit cards on-site or electronic funds transfer, making recovery convenient once you've gathered the funds. However, delaying collection by even a few days substantially increases your bill. Mitchell Park residents often don't realize that unregistered vehicles incur additional penalties, pushing costs toward $400. To understand the full financial implications and dispute procedures, review the Yarra City Council towed vehicles resource.
Your Rights and Disputing Wrongful Towing
Not every towing is justified. If you believe your vehicle was removed without proper cause, you have the right to dispute it. Wrongful towing happens, sometimes parking signs are unclear, or enforcement officers make errors. Mitchell Park residents can contact the Port Phillip Council directly with evidence of the incident and your towing notice. Document everything: photos of the parking area, timestamps, and any communications with authorities.
Compensation claims are possible if you can prove wrongful vehicle removal. Gather all documentation, including the towing notice, council correspondence, and communication with the towing company. The process requires patience but protects your rights. Many drivers successfully recover fees when they present clear evidence that signage was inadequate or enforcement was incorrect. Understanding these steps empowers you to navigate the situation effectively and potentially reclaim your money as a vehicle owner in Mitchell Park.
