Understanding Impound Fees and Charges
When your vehicle is towed in South Melbourne, costs accumulate rapidly. The release fee typically starts at $265, with daily storage charges adding $31 for each day your car remains in the yard. A vehicle left unclaimed for just five days can cost over $450 before you even retrieve it. Payment methods are convenient: credit card payments work directly at the yard or via phone for remote settlement, though neither option makes the expense any easier to swallow.
Beyond the base towing fee, additional charges may apply depending on your vehicle's condition or the circumstances of the tow. The City of Melbourne's towing guidelines detail all potential costs, so you understand exactly what you'll face. Parking violations in no-parking zones around busy South Melbourne intersections like Park Street and Clarendon Street are among the most common reasons for towing. Acting quickly to retrieve your vehicle minimizes storage charges and gets you back on the road faster. Keep all receipts and documentation for potential dispute resolution or insurance claims.
Disputing Wrongful Towing and Your Legal Rights
If you believe your vehicle was wrongfully towed in South Melbourne, understanding your rights is critical. The first step involves contacting the towing company directly to dispute the charges and present evidence supporting your case. Document everything: take photographs of parking signs, road markings, and the exact location where your vehicle was parked if possible. The City of Port Phillip takes complaints seriously and has formal procedures for investigating wrongful towing claims.
You may be eligible for compensation if you can prove your vehicle was unlawfully towed or if the towing company failed to follow proper procedures. Submit formal complaints to the City of Port Phillip with all supporting documentation, including photos and witness statements. Remember: the sooner you address the issue, the better your chances of successful resolution or compensation.
Avoiding Towing: Smart Parking Strategies for South Melbourne
The best towing recovery strategy is preventing one in the first place.
