The local council, the Bayside Council, offers a range of services aimed at facilitating ease of access to public spaces. Residents and visitors can apply for a disability parking permit, which allows parking in designated accessible bays throughout popular areas such as Anzac Parade and near the Kensington Park. These permits significantly enhance the independence of those who require additional support, offering peace of mind in daily activities.

A small fee of $25 AUD is typically required for a permit, which must be renewed every three years. With accessible parking locations prominently marked, including near Kensington Oval and the local shops on the corner of Doncaster Avenue, it is crucial for permit holders to understand the regulations governing these spaces. Adhering to the guidelines ensures that accessible parking remains available for those who need it most, promoting inclusivity within the community.
Getting Your Mobility Parking Permit
In Kensington, individuals with mobility disabilities can apply for a mobility parking permit through the NSW Mobility Parking Scheme. This scheme offers two types of permits: a permanent blue permit valid for five years, and a temporary red permit lasting up to six months. If you have a permanent condition limiting your mobility, the blue permit is your option. The red permit suits those with temporary disabilities, such as a recent leg injury or post-surgical recovery.
Service NSW is the issuing authority for these permits, and applications can be submitted online or at designated service centres throughout the area. You'll need a medical certificate from your doctor or specialist confirming your eligibility. It's crucial to keep your personal details updated with Service NSW, particularly if you've moved recently: notify them within 14 days of any address changes. Visit the NSW mobility parking permits page for full eligibility details.
Application Steps for Kensington Residents
First, acquire a medical report from your doctor confirming your eligibility. This is vital. If you're applying for the first time or renewing, ask your doctor whether a fitness to drive assessment is needed, especially if your condition is new or you haven't had one in six months. The assessment ensures you can safely operate a vehicle, protecting both you and other road users.
After securing your medical report, apply either online through Service NSW or visit a service centre in Kensington. You'll need a photo ID; if you don't have one in the system, you can have a photo taken at the service centre. Those with disabilities preventing centre visits may qualify for a photo exemption.
