The Selly Oak Shopping Park offers something even better: free parking for up to four hours, accommodating over 800 vehicles across its expansive site.
Monthly permit holders, particularly students and staff at the University of Birmingham, enjoy a flat rate of just £3 per day. This pricing structure encourages long-term permit ownership and helps manage the constant flow of vehicles throughout the suburb. Pay-and-Display Meters and Contactless Payment Systems

Why Selly Oak's Parking Demand Creates Cost Pressures
Selly Oak faces genuine parking challenges during peak hours. The area attracts constant traffic from students at the University of Birmingham, shoppers visiting the retail parks, and visitors to nearby healthcare facilities. Peak periods, typically lunchtime and late afternoon, see parking space availability plummet, sometimes forcing drivers to circle for minutes searching for a spot. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, located just 1,041 metres away, adds to this demand, especially during visiting hours when families need quick access to affordable parking.
The Selly Oak Shopping Park fills quickly despite its 800-space capacity, particularly on weekends. When the free four-hour period expires, drivers face the choice of paying hourly rates or relocating entirely. This mismatch between supply and demand means some visitors overstay their welcome in restricted zones, risking parking fines. The proximity of major institutions (hospitals, the university, the train station) creates a perfect storm of competing parking needs, making advance planning essential for stress-free visits to the suburb.
Smart Strategies to Reduce Your Selly Oak Parking Costs
Savvy drivers in Selly Oak have discovered ways to beat the system. Monthly permits offer the best value if you visit regularly, slashing your effective daily cost to £3 compared to the £6.30 peak rate. Timing matters too: parking before 9 AM or after 6 PM often attracts lower rates in controlled zones.
