Parking costs and rates in La Jolla, California, can vary significantly depending on the location and time of day. Popular areas such as Prospect Street and La Jolla Cove typically experience higher demand, leading to hourly rates that can range from $1.50 to $3.00. Street parking is often metered, and restrictions may apply during peak hours, primarily enforced by the San Diego City Council. Visitors should be aware that parking is limited, especially during weekends and holidays.
In addition to metered parking, there are several public parking lots in the area, such as the La Jolla Shores Parking Lot and the Cove Beach Parking Lot. Rates for these lots generally start at around $10 for a full day, making it a more economical option for those planning to spend several hours exploring the beautiful coastline. For those looking to avoid the hassle, private parking garages are also available, but they can charge upwards of $20 per day. To save money, consider using public transportation or ride-sharing services, especially during busy tourist seasons when parking can become a significant challenge.

Peak-season demand transforms parking into a competitive sport here. Weekends and summer months see drivers circling blocks near La Jolla Shores, wasting time and fuel. Understanding meter locations helps: the main shopping district clusters meters near Prospect Street and the village center. Metered street parking remains your cheapest option if you're willing to hunt early and comply with posted time limits.
The City of San Diego enforces parking violations strictly in La Jolla. Enforcement rules and regulations change periodically, so checking current restrictions before parking saves headaches. Some areas transition to permit-only during summer months, catching visitors off guard with hefty citations.

Private parking lots throughout La Jolla command premium rates reflecting the area's desirability. Daily parking at lots near La Jolla Shores ranges from $10 to $20, depending on proximity to the beach and nearby attractions like Scripps Beach. Lots closer to the La Jolla Playhouse offer discounted flat rates of $6 when you book shows through their official channels, making cultural outings more budget-friendly.
Weekend and holiday rates spike noticeably across all private facilities. A $15 weekday rate jumps to $25 or higher on Saturdays and Sundays, particularly during summer. Savvy visitors explore alternative parking strategies by arriving early or using alternative parking methods to avoid peak-hour premiums. Some lots charge up to $45 per day during peak season, making them cost-prohibitive for extended visits.

Monthly Parking Subscriptions and Resident Permits
Monthly parking in La Jolla represents the best value for frequent visitors and residents. Average monthly costs hover around $352, with pricing ranging from $222 to $450 based on location and proximity to major attractions. A spot near Avenida de la Playa's shopping district costs more than equivalent parking near residential areas east of Prospect Street.
Commuters benefit tremendously from guaranteed bay access without hourly rate anxiety. Monthly subscribers enjoy predictable parking costs that simplify budgeting and eliminate surge pricing concerns. The village's 100% coverage of 24/7 access means you'll find open facilities regardless of arrival time. For residents seeking long-term solutions, monthly permits provide stability that hourly systems simply cannot match.
The City of San Diego offers resident permit programs allowing reduced-rate parking in designated zones. Eligible residents can secure permits through the resident permit application process, though application timelines and eligibility requirements vary seasonally. Documentation typically includes proof of residency and vehicle registration.
Comparing Budget Strategies Across La Jolla's Zones
La Jolla divides into distinct parking zones with vastly different rate structures. The Cove area surrounding Children's Pool and La Jolla Cove offers free street parking but with strict time limits and fierce competition. The Shores district near Scripps Beach features moderate daily rates ($10–$20) in private lots, making it popular with morning beachgoers. The village center around Prospect Street and Avenida de la Playa commands the highest hourly rates ($1.50–$2 per hour) but offers the most abundant metered options.
Residential permit zones protect neighborhood streets from commuter spillover, creating parking relief for locals. Strategic parking one block away from main attractions often saves $5–$10 daily compared to premium lots. Understanding La Jolla's geography helps identify these hidden value zones. Summer visitors often overlook quieter streets behind the Playhouse or south of Cave Store Road, where finding $10 daily lots is realistic.
