Eligibility Criteria and Medical Requirements
Not every resident qualifies for disability parking permits. VicRoads assesses applications based on specific mobility criteria established by Victorian law. Your GP plays a crucial role in this process. They provide medical certification that documents your disability status and functional limitations. The assessment considers whether you experience genuine difficulty walking, require assistance with mobility aids, or have medical conditions that affect safe parking lot navigation. This medical foundation protects the permit system's integrity. It ensures that genuine users receive the support they need.
The medical certification isn't merely paperwork. It's the backbone of your application. Your doctor examines your condition thoroughly and documents mobility challenges clearly for VicRoads assessors. This process typically takes two to three weeks, so schedule GP appointments early. Once approved, your accessible parking permit unlocks reserved bays across Gordon and throughout Victoria. The green temporary permit suits conditions expected to improve, while the blue standard permit accommodates long-term or permanent disabilities. Plan medical consultations strategically to align with your parking needs.
Making Your Application and Managing Your Permit
Submitting your disability parking application requires gathering documents and visiting your local VicRoads office. You should bring proof of residency, such as utility bills or lease agreements. Additionally, include medical reports from your doctor, identification documents, and completed application forms. The VicRoads team at their service centers guides applicants through the submission process. They answer questions and clarify requirements as needed. Processing typically takes four to six weeks, depending on the volume of applications. Budget for the $15 application fee and consider renewal dates carefully. Permits expire, so timely reapplication is necessary to avoid gaps.
