Successful applicants can enjoy the convenience of parking in specially marked spaces. These spaces are typically located near entrances to public facilities. Disability Parking Permit Types in Belvedere
In Belvedere, Alberta, disability parking permits come in three distinct categories. These categories are designed to suit different medical situations. Temporary placards last between 3 to 12 months and are ideal for those recovering from surgery or injury. Long-term and permanent placards remain valid for 5 years. The permanent option is renewable without additional medical certification after that initial period.
To qualify for any accessible parking placard, you must demonstrate an inability to walk more than 50 metres without significant difficulty or assistance. The Alberta government serves as the issuing authority and requires adequate medical proof from a licensed physician or occupational therapist. One critical limitation exists: Alberta currently excludes individuals with sensory impairments, such as blindness or low vision, from eligibility. This restriction affects roughly 160,350 Albertans. Consequently, this gap in coverage has sparked ongoing advocacy efforts to broaden the criteria.
How to Apply for Your Parking Permit
Applying for disability parking in Belvedere begins at authorized Registry Agent offices. There, you'll complete an application form and submit medical documentation. Your physician must confirm that you meet the mobility threshold. You must submit the application personally, unless you provide a consent form authorizing someone else to apply on your behalf. This requirement protects against fraud and ensures accurate processing.
Once submitted, an authorized healthcare provider reviews your application within 10 business days. If your medical evidence is insufficient, the approval process stalls. This situation creates real hardship for applicants. Organizations like CNIB have pushed Alberta to reconsider its exclusion of sensory disabilities. They argue that accessible parking benefits everyone. For current eligibility requirements and the application form, visit the Alberta disability parking placard page.
