How to Apply for Your Disability Parking Permit
Obtaining a disability parking permit in Kamloops is straightforward. You'll need to complete an application form with medical certification from a physician or nurse practitioner confirming your accessibility needs. People In Motion, the designated provincial provider, manages all permits across British Columbia. The process takes just a few steps and ensures eligible individuals get the support they deserve.
Submit your completed application during People In Motion's office hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 3:30 pm (closed 12:30 pm to 1 pm for lunch). Permanent permits cost $40 and remain valid for three years, while temporary permits are $25 and last up to one year. Lost or stolen replacements incur an additional $25 fee. Once approved, you'll receive your permit quickly and can begin using accessible parking spaces throughout Kamloops immediately.
Kamloops Parking Costs and Time Limits for Permit Holders
Here's the financial advantage: the City of Kamloops offers free parking in any city-managed lot for up to three hours with a valid disability permit. This applies to downtown core areas and most municipal parking facilities. However, privately managed lots (such as those at Royal Inland Hospital or Sahali Centre Mall) operate under different rules and won't honor the free parking benefit.
Compared to standard parking rates in Kamloops, which can reach $3 to $5 per hour downtown, the three-hour free window represents genuine savings for residents managing mobility challenges. The permit eliminates the stress of searching for conventional spaces and provides priority access to designated accessible bays positioned near building entrances. Strategic Accessible Parking Locations Throughout Kamloops
Designated accessible parking bays are positioned strategically across Kamloops to maximize convenience. Royal Inland Hospital, located under one mile from downtown, features multiple reserved spaces outside its main entrance. The Sahali Centre Mall provides several accessible spots near major retailers, making shopping accessible without mobility barriers. These locations were selected based on community demand and foot traffic patterns.
Cultural landmarks also prioritize accessibility. The Cenotaph and Overlanders Park both offer nearby reserved spaces, allowing visitors to experience local history comfortably. Downtown's main business district includes accessible parking within walking distance of most shops and services. The city continuously monitors these locations to ensure compliance with provincial accessibility standards and maintains clear signage identifying each reserved bay. Enforcement and Misuse Prevention in Kamloops
The City of Kamloops takes permit misuse seriously. Parking in accessible spaces without a valid permit results in substantial fines, typically $250 to $500 depending on the violation severity. Enforcement officers conduct regular patrols of reserved bays, particularly during peak downtown hours and at high-traffic locations like hospitals and shopping centers.
Permit holders must display their permit visibly on the vehicle's dashboard. Expired permits are no longer valid, so set renewal reminders before your three-year or one-year validity period expires. Fraudulent permits or lending permits to ineligible individuals are treated as offenses under British Columbia's Motor Vehicle Act.
