Understanding Fredericton's Accessible Parking Standards
Fredericton enforces strict parking bay dimensions to ensure everyone can access spaces safely. Standard accessible parking bays measure 3.4 metres wide minimum, with an additional 1.5-metre access aisle alongside. This width accommodates wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility aids comfortably. The City of Fredericton's planning department maintains these standards across all public lots, hospitals, and municipal buildings. Violating these regulations (by parking illegally in accessible spaces or blocking access aisles) results in hefty fines.
Misuse of disabled parking permits is taken seriously by local enforcement. Fines reach $300 for unauthorised use, and repeat offenders face escalating penalties. Fredericton Regional Hospital on Prospect Street, Regent Mall, and City Hall at 397 York Street all have monitored accessible spots. Staff patrol regularly to ensure only permit holders use these spaces. The city works with provincial motor vehicle law to keep these areas available for people who genuinely need them.
