Getting Your Accessible Parking Permit
In Regent Park, Ontario, individuals with disabilities can obtain accessible parking permits at no cost through ServiceOntario. The application process requires medical certification from a healthcare practitioner. This certification must confirm specific mobility limitations, such as an inability to walk without assistive devices or severe visual impairments. Such measures ensure that only eligible individuals gain access to designated parking spaces throughout the neighbourhood.
After gathering your signed medical certification and identification, you can apply online or in person at ServiceOntario locations. The City of Toronto administers these permits under provincial regulations. This makes the process straightforward for Regent Park residents. There is no fee for applications or renewals, which removes financial barriers to accessibility. Your permit must be displayed clearly on your vehicle's sun visor or dashboard. It should show the permit number and expiry date for enforcement purposes.
Permit Rules and Parking Enforcement
Misusing an accessible parking permit carries serious consequences. Fines can reach up to $5,000 under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act. Permit holders must ensure that the named individual is actually in the vehicle. Using someone else's permit is illegal and subject to penalty. Parking enforcement officers throughout Regent Park actively monitor compliance. Improperly parked vehicles risk being tagged or towed without warning.
Council bylaws established by the City of Toronto mandate that accessible parking bays maintain minimum widths of at least 3.4 meters. This requirement accommodates mobility aids like wheelchairs and walkers. Permit details must stay current with your personal information to avoid enforcement issues.
