Understanding the Accessible Parking Permit System
In Tottenham, Ontario, an Accessible Parking Permit is your key to designated spaces. This permit is issued to individuals with mobility limitations, not to vehicles. You must be present when the vehicle parks in a reserved bay, either as the driver or as a passenger. It's straightforward: there are no application fees, no renewal costs, and no replacement charges. The permit works across Ontario, so you have consistent access wherever you go in the province.
The Tottenham municipal government enforces strict bylaws to protect these spaces. Misuse carries penalties of up to $5,000, which serves as a serious deterrent. Permit holders must display their permit visibly on the dashboard or sun visor. The permit number and expiry date must be clearly readable. Think of it as your contract with the community: use it correctly, and mobility becomes manageable.
How to Apply for Your Permit in Tottenham
Getting an accessible parking permit begins with medical certification from a regulated healthcare practitioner. Your doctor must confirm a mobility-limiting condition, such as the inability to walk without assistive devices, significant cardiovascular disease, or similar restrictions. This documentation establishes your eligibility. It also protects the integrity of reserved spaces on Queen Street, Main Street, and Mill Street, where Tottenham residents park daily.
You can submit your application online or in-person at designated municipal locations. The Ontario government provides the official application form at Get an accessible parking permit. Regulations and Enforcement in Tottenham
Tottenham's bylaws strictly govern accessible parking use. Permit holders must display their permit at all times while parked in reserved spaces. Failure to display the permit results in penalty notices. The permit is personal, meaning only the named individual or an authorized caregiver may use the vehicle parked in that bay. Caregivers accompanying permit holders are acceptable. However, lending the permit to unrelated individuals violates municipal bylaws and invites fines.
Enforcement officers patrol regularly, particularly near the Health Centre and Town Hall. Violations carry escalating penalties. Initial fines start at $350 and can reach $5,000 for repeated misuse. More importantly, abuse of accessible spaces reduces availability for those who genuinely need them. The Ontario Accessibility Standards govern these protections at the provincial level. To report misused permits, contact Tottenham Town Hall or reach out to local bylaw enforcement for swift action.
