In Uxbridge, Ontario, obtaining an accessible parking permit is essential for individuals with mobility limitations. The application process is streamlined and completely free, allowing eligible residents to acquire the permit without incurring any costs. The Regional Municipality of Durham administers these permits, ensuring fair access to designated parking spaces across the community.
To qualify, your healthcare provider must confirm a mobility restriction, which could include conditions such as requiring a wheelchair or possessing limited walking ability. Serious lung disease, cardiovascular complications, and other significant mobility challenges all meet eligibility criteria. Once approved, your permit must be displayed prominently on your vehicle's dashboard or sun visor when using accessible spots. Misusing the permit can lead to severe penalties; violators may face fines of up to $5,000, and the permit can be confiscated immediately.
Local Bylaws and Permit Regulations
Uxbridge's municipal bylaws strictly define how accessible parking regulations are enforced throughout the town. Parking in these areas is exclusively reserved for permit holders, ensuring genuine accessibility for those who truly need it. The spacing standard for these accessible spots requires a minimum width of 1.2 meters, which is crucial for wheelchair access and vehicle transfers. These specifications protect the integrity of the system and guarantee that every designated space serves its intended purpose.

The Region of Durham's bylaw enforcement team actively monitors violations, and penalties extend beyond fines to include permit confiscation. Local facilities like Uxbridge Town Hall on Marilyn Drive and Uxbridge Cottage Hospital on Toronto Street enforce these rules consistently.
