Understanding Disability Parking Permits in Griffintown
In Griffintown, disability parking permits are essential for residents and visitors who have mobility impairments. The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) issues these permits, which remain valid for three years. After this period, renewal is required. Griffintown's redevelopment has significantly increased foot traffic. As a result, accessible parking spots have become more valuable than ever. These permits grant access to designated bays that are located closer to shops, services, and attractions throughout the neighbourhood.
There are two main types of permits: permanent and temporary. Permanent permits serve those with ongoing mobility challenges. In contrast, temporary permits accommodate individuals with short-term conditions. To qualify, applicants must submit medical documentation from a licensed healthcare provider. This documentation must confirm their need for accessible parking. The SAAQ evaluates each application carefully. This ensures that accessible parking spaces go to those who genuinely need them. Documentation typically includes a mobility assessment and a physician's letter detailing the specific impairment.
Application Process and Requirements
Securing a disability permit involves several straightforward steps. First, obtain medical certification from your general practitioner. This certification must confirm your mobility impairment and detail why you require accessible parking accommodations. Once your documentation is ready, submit your application through the Ville de Montréal application portal along with the required forms. Typically, the municipality processes applications within 4-6 weeks.
After approval, you'll receive your permit, which displays your vehicle's license plate information. The SAAQ provides comprehensive eligibility details on their website. Keep your permit visible on your dashboard when parking in designated bays. Remember, non-compliance with parking regulations can result in fines up to $300 CAD in Griffintown. Renewal requires updated medical documentation before expiration. This ensures that permit validity remains current and legitimate.

Griffintown's accessible parking bays must meet strict provincial standards set by the Quebec Building Code. Each accessible parking bay requires minimum dimensions of 3.4 meters wide. This width provides sufficient space for wheelchair lifts and transfers. Adjacent access aisles must also be equally wide, totalling 6.8 meters of usable accessible space. Such specifications ensure users can safely operate mobility devices without obstruction. The City of Montreal enforces these standards rigorously across all public and private parking facilities in the neighbourhood.
