Understanding the Blue Badge Scheme in Mendip Hills
The Blue Badge Scheme offers vital support to individuals with severe walking difficulties, those who are visually impaired, and people with hidden disabilities such as autism or mental health conditions. This nationally recognised badge allows you to park in designated disabled parking bays across the UK, plus enjoy concessions when travelling as driver or passenger. Issued by local councils, the badge remains valid for three years and requires periodic renewal to stay current with your needs. Somerset Council and North Somerset Council both streamline applications online, making the process straightforward and accessible from home.
Eligibility criteria vary, but generally include those with severe walking difficulties, terminal illness, or significant mobility challenges. The application requires supporting documentation such as medical certifications or evidence of your disability. Processing typically takes eight weeks, so apply well in advance of travel needs. For those applying under hidden disability criteria, specific guidelines ensure you provide correct information. Wells, Glastonbury, and Shepton Mallet are key towns where you'll find these bays regularly available and enforced by local parking teams.
How to Apply for a Blue Badge in Mendip Hills
The application process begins by determining your eligibility through Somerset Council or North Somerset Council websites. Gather supporting documentation including medical records, then complete the online form and pay the £10 fee. The council reviews your application and either approves or requests additional evidence. Once approved, your physical badge arrives within two weeks, valid at every accessible parking location nationwide. Renewals follow the same process and should be initiated two months before expiry to avoid gaps in your parking rights.
Hidden disabilities require extra attention during application. Conditions like autism, anxiety, and certain neurological disorders qualify under specific guidelines. North Somerset Council provides detailed guidance on their Blue badges disabled parking permits page, explaining exactly what evidence strengthens your case. Somerset Council similarly offers comprehensive Apply for or renew a Blue Badge resources. Understanding Blue Badge Misuse and Enforcement
Parking violations involving the Blue Badge scheme carry serious consequences in Mendip Hills. Fines reach up to £1,000, plus potential legal action, for misusing badges or parking illegally in accessible parking spaces. Somerset Council and North Somerset Council enforcement officers patrol regularly, especially near popular destinations like the Mendip Hills AONB Visitor Centre, Wells Cathedral, and Cheddar Gorge. Accessible bays must meet strict width standards, typically 2.4 metres minimum, to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids safely. Every bay displays clear markings and signage to prevent confusion or accidental misuse.
Vehicles parked in designated bays must display a valid, in-date Blue Badge. Suspicious activity can be reported directly to the council parking team for immediate investigation. Enforcement isn't about penalising genuine users; it protects those who truly need these spaces from losing access. The regulations exist because disabled parking enforcement ensures fairness and accessibility for all. Local parking operators work closely with council teams to maintain these standards across town centres, hospitals, and leisure facilities throughout the Mendip Hills area.
