Parking Near Baw Baw
Free on-street parking across Baw Baw Shire
All on-street public parking in Baw Baw Shire is free, making unrestricted residential streets the clearest option for drivers who can walk from the vehicle. Most residential streets have unrestricted on-street parking for residents and guests, and anyone may park there. A vehicle left unmoved for 60 days may be considered abandoned or derelict and may be towed after notice to the registered owner (Baw Baw Shire Council).
Baw Baw Shire uses one-, two-, three- and four-hour restrictions in different areas, so a free bay may still require the car to move before the displayed limit expires. Parking restrictions can also reserve spaces for buses, taxis or construction activity (Baw Baw Shire Council).
Baw Baw free parking during busy periods
Free public parking in Baw Baw Shire is most useful near residential streets, shopping precincts and railway stations, but time-restricted areas are designed to turn spaces over fairly. Shopping activity can make the short-stay bays near commercial areas harder to find, while railway-station parking can fill when commuters leave cars for the day.
Mount Baw Baw offers free parking in summer. In winter, the resort entry fee includes parking, so the resort is a named seasonal alternative rather than a free winter car park (Mount Baw Baw).
Baw Baw time limits, permits and accessible parking
The shire’s time-restricted areas can impose one-, two-, three- or four-hour limits, and parking longer than the period shown is a common infringement. Commercial traders and construction workers may apply for a Local Laws General Permit for time-restricted areas, but that permit is not a general free-parking entitlement (Baw Baw Shire Council).
Residential streets are free for ordinary vehicles, but vehicles longer than 7.5 metres or heavier than 4.5 tonnes need a permit to remain on a residential street for more than one hour. Baw Baw’s Accessible Parking Permit scheme gives green Double Time or Category 2 permit holders twice the permissible time in an ordinary bay, while reserved-bay and Double Time permits are allocated through a mobility assessment.
Baw Baw parking fines and infringement process
Baw Baw Shire authorised officers patrol parking bays and other areas and may issue an Infringement Notice for offences including overstaying a timed bay, stopping on a footpath, using a loading zone, parking in a disability area without a permit, facing the wrong direction or stopping in a no-parking zone.
An infringement can be paid through the council’s infringement process, but an overdue notice cannot be paid online once additional charges have been incurred. A driver can seek a review where the infringement was contrary to law, including where a timed restriction did not apply or an officer acted outside their authority. Baw Baw also has a refund scheme for eligible fines issued from 1 January 2002 to 30 June 2010 or from 1 July 2016 to 4 August 2025 for seven listed minor offences; fines issued from 5 August 2025 are excluded (Baw Baw Shire Council).
