Parking Near North Vancouver
Free Parking Periods in the City of North Vancouver
The City of North Vancouver’s pay-parking spaces provide the clearest general free option: the first 30 minutes are free, and overnight parking is free from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m (cnv.org). The free periods apply to pay-parking spaces rather than creating unrestricted parking on every street, so a driver using a short visit or an overnight stop can use the relevant curb space without a parking charge.
The City of North Vancouver also allows city residents to obtain a permit for themselves or a guest to park on the street near their home for up to 72 hours without penalty (cnv.org). This is a resident or guest arrangement, not a general free-parking entitlement for visitors. Drivers looking for a free daytime space should therefore distinguish between the first 30 minutes in a pay-parking space and permit-based residential parking.
North Vancouver Time Limits and Permit Rules for Free Spaces
The City of North Vancouver requires vehicles to remain within the duration shown on the parking sign, such as two hours, during the time of day shown on that sign, such as 9 a.m. to 9 p.m (cnv.org). A space can therefore be free during an advertised free period while still being subject to a posted duration or other restriction. The City’s pay-parking information identifies free parking from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., but the sign at the space controls the applicable limit.
The City of North Vancouver’s resident and visitor permits allow vehicles to park in permit areas for up to 72 hours, which is the maximum on-street period under the Street & Traffic Bylaw (cnv.org). SPARC accessible permit holders are eligible for free parking in City pay-parking areas.
North Vancouver Alternatives When Free Spaces Fill
Free curb spaces are most difficult to find during busy daytime periods in pay-parking areas, before the City of North Vancouver’s free overnight period begins at 9 p.m. A driver who cannot find a lawful free space can use the secure garage at 1650 Lonsdale Ave for $4.24 an hour, or the secure 24/7 garage space in North Vancouver for $5 an hour.
TransLink lists Park Royal North in West Vancouver as a free Park and Ride site (translink.ca). Lions Bay is also listed as a free Park and Ride site. Both sites are outside North Vancouver, so they suit a driver prepared to leave the vehicle beyond the city and continue by transit rather than circle for a central free space.
North Vancouver Parking Penalties and Ticket Payment
The restriction concerns the vehicle’s position, not whether the nearby space is free, so an unpaid space does not make stopping in a prohibited location lawful.
The City of North Vancouver’s parking rules provide for enforcement against vehicles that exceed the duration shown on a sign or otherwise breach the posted restriction (cnv.org). Vancouver’s separate ticket-payment process allows online, telephone or in-person payment and offers a 30 percent reduction when paid within 14 days, but that process belongs to the City of Vancouver rather than the City of North Vancouver (vancouver.ca).
