Free Parking Periods in Whitby’s Municipal Lots and Streets
The Town of Whitby offers free parking every weekday after 6 p.m., plus Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, in its municipal parking system. This suits an evening visit or a short weekend stop, but a vehicle left beyond three hours can still be subject to enforcement.
A council-directed pilot made two downtown Whitby parking lots free for a maximum of four hours during the summer pilot period (durhamregion.com). The pilot applies to the two named lots covered by the council decision, rather than creating unrestricted free parking across Whitby. Whitby’s short-term on-street registration service costs nothing, but the service is for registering vehicles belonging to guests, contractors or other infrequent visitors, not a general parking exemption (whitby.ca).
Parksy Spaces Near Whitby When the Free Bays Are Full
A secure private parking space in Whitby with 24/7 access is 680 metres away and costs $275 a week. The weekly space suits a driver who needs reliable longer-stay parking rather than a short free-period visit.
A parking space at 124 Lupin Drive is 1.0 kilometre away and costs $1.85 an hour. The Whitby parking lot with 24/7 access is 3.6 kilometres away and costs $4 an hour. The Lupin Drive space suits a short paid stay closer to town, while the 24/7 lot suits drivers who need access outside a daytime visit. Oshawa options are farther away: a lot 7.1 kilometres away costs $2 an hour, and a private caravan space 8.1 kilometres away costs $90 a month.
Busy Whitby Visits and Lower-Cost Parking Beyond the Free Periods
Whitby’s two downtown lots become especially important when free spaces fill during summer, when the four-hour pilot operates, and during busy downtown visits. After that allowance, a driver needs another lawful space or must move the vehicle.
The named lower-cost Parksy alternative is the Oshawa lot 7.1 kilometres from Whitby, priced at $2 an hour or $10 a day. A second Oshawa lot 8.2 kilometres away also costs $2 an hour and includes a disabled bay. These are paid alternatives for drivers willing to park outside Whitby when nearby free spaces are occupied.
Whitby Time Limits, Overnight Controls and Permit-Based Parking
The four-hour allowance in the two downtown pilot lots is a separate summer pilot limit, so drivers cannot extend a three-hour municipal stay simply because parking is free (durhamregion.com).
Champlain Court has stopping and parking restrictions on both sides at all times, from Hopkins Street to its west limit (durhamregion.com). The Town’s parking rules therefore distinguish between general free periods, a named pilot-lot allowance, registration for specific visitors and streets with all-time restrictions.
Whitby Parking Penalties, Payment and Ticket Disputes
The Town of Whitby issues Penalty Notices for parking violations, and failure to pay a Penalty Notice can lead to further consequences for the registered owner (whitby.ca).
Whitby parking penalties range from $15 for a minor offence to $300 for parking violations (durhamregion.com). The Town’s parking-ticket service covers payment and disputes, so a driver can use the authority’s process rather than treating an overstay as an ordinary parking fee (whitby.ca). An overstay during a free period remains a parking offence when it exceeds the applicable three-hour or four-hour limit, and the penalty amount depends on the violation issued.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where Can I Find Free Parking in Whitby, Ontario?
Whitby municipal parking is free after 6 p.m. on weekdays, plus Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, but a vehicle left beyond three hours can still be subject to enforcement. During the summer pilot, two downtown Whitby lots allow free parking for a maximum of four hours (durhamregion.com). When Is Parking Free in Whitby?
The Town of Whitby offers free parking every weekday after 6 p.m., as well as Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, in its municipal parking system. These free periods do not remove the applicable time limit: a vehicle left beyond three hours can still be subject to enforcement. The summer pilot’s two downtown lots have a separate maximum of four hours (durhamregion.com).
How Long Can I Park for Free in Whitby’s Downtown Pilot Lots?
A council-directed summer pilot makes two downtown Whitby parking lots free for a maximum of four hours (durhamregion.com). This is a named pilot-lot allowance, not unrestricted free parking throughout Whitby. After the four-hour allowance, you need another lawful space or must move the vehicle. A three-hour municipal stay cannot be extended simply because parking is free.
Can I Register a Vehicle for Free Short-Term Parking in Whitby?
Whitby’s short-term on-street registration service costs nothing, but it is for registering vehicles belonging to guests, contractors or other infrequent visitors (whitby.ca). It is not a general parking exemption. Drivers still need to follow Whitby’s parking rules, including the applicable three-hour or four-hour limit and any street-specific restrictions.
Are There Whitby Streets Where Parking Is Prohibited?
Champlain Court has stopping and parking restrictions on both sides at all times, from Hopkins Street to its west limit (durhamregion.com). This restriction is separate from Whitby’s general free periods and the summer pilot allowance in two downtown lots. Drivers should use a lawful parking space rather than assuming that free municipal parking periods apply on every street.
What Happens If I Overstay Free Parking in Whitby?
An overstay during a free period remains a parking offence when it exceeds the applicable three-hour or four-hour limit. Whitby issues Penalty Notices for parking violations, with penalties ranging from $15 for a minor offence to $300 for parking violations (durhamregion.com). Payment and disputes are handled through the Town’s parking-ticket service (whitby.ca).
