Barnet CPZs, Permit Bays and the Limits on Free Stays
Barnet applies parking controls to every street inside a controlled parking zone, with signs marking entry to and exit from each CPZ (barnet.gov.uk). CPZ operating times vary by location: some zones operate from 8am to 6.30pm, while another restriction may operate only from 2pm to 3pm (barnetresidentsassociation.org.uk). A space that appears free outside a charging period can therefore still be governed by a separate waiting or permit restriction.
Resident and business parking bays and parking restrictions are mapped through Barnet’s Traffweb service (barnet.traffweb.app). Barnet also introduces a CPZ on days when Saracens play home matches at Copthall Stadium and on two additional major-events days each year (barnet.gov.uk). High Barnet’s Moxon Street and the top end of the High Street have a four-hour maximum stay, according to the Barnet Residents Association (barnetresidentsassociation.org.uk). A resident-only bay is free only for the authorised permit holder, not for a general visitor.
Cheaper Barnet Choices When Central Spaces Are Full
High Barnet’s central council parking is described as consistently full, while The Spires car park is often less occupied (barnetresidentsassociation.org.uk). Drivers looking for a free space should therefore expect the greatest pressure during commuter periods and should not treat the all-day provision there as guaranteed.
The Barnet Residents Association identifies Fitzjohn Avenue as a long-stay council option and describes it as having the cheapest all-day charge in town (barnetresidentsassociation.org.uk). The Spires Shopping Centre parking listed by Parksy costs £5.75 an hour and is 0.2 miles away, providing a named paid alternative when central council spaces are occupied.
Barnet PCN Discounts, Challenges and Enforcement
Barnet issues Penalty Charge Notices for parking contraventions, and the council offers a 50 per cent discount when a PCN is paid within 14 days of the issue date (barnet.gov.uk). Paying the PCN within that period counts as admitting liability.
A driver who disputes a Barnet PCN can submit a challenge through the council’s PCN process (barnet.gov.uk). If Barnet rejects the challenge, the council still allows payment at the discounted amount of 50 per cent of the charge. The PCN dashboard records on-street PCNs issued in the London Borough of Barnet since 1 January 2015 (open.barnet.gov.uk).
