Parking Near Dorset
Free parking days and unrestricted roadside spaces across Dorset
Dorset Council provides free parking on selected dates in council-run car parks in Beaminster, Blandford, Bridport, Corfe Castle, Dorchester, Ferndown, Gillingham, Lyme Regis, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Wareham, Weymouth and Wimborne during its Christmas 2025 promotion (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). Participating machines and the JustPark app show no charge on those dates, but the offer does not cover on-street parking or unlisted car parks.
Roadside parking in Dorset can be free where no restriction is in place, and Dorset Council says drivers may park where they want if doing so safely (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). A free roadside space is not automatically unrestricted: signs can impose waiting or parking limits, while double yellow lines prohibit parking at any time. Local town councils may also provide free parking on particular days around Christmas, with dates and locations announced locally.
Dorset Council limits, permits and Blue Badge concessions
Dorset Council’s on-street signs determine whether a free space has a time limit, a permit requirement or hours of control (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). Enforcement can operate on Sundays and Bank Holidays whenever the restriction applies.
Blue Badge holders can park free of charge without a time limit in designated on-street disabled bays, pay-and-display bays and limited-wait bays, subject to any bay-specific sign (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). A disabled bay may still carry a displayed limit, such as three hours or a 10am to 5pm period. A Blue Badge also allows up to three hours on single or double yellow lines when no loading ban applies, with the clock set to the arrival time; yellow kerb markings prohibit this concession.
Christmas dates and low-cost council parking when Dorset fills up
Dorset Council’s free Christmas parking dates cover selected council-run car parks in 14 Dorset towns, making the run-up to Christmas a particularly busy period for the participating sites (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). The promotion does not make on-street parking free, and normal charges remain at car parks outside the published participating list. Shopping days and seasonal visits therefore put pressure on the limited free supply.
For regular town-centre parking, Dorset Council offers a short-stay car park permit for one session of up to three hours each day in most council car parks, with two vehicles registrable to the permit (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). The permit costs £95 a year, while the example Fairfield car park rate in Dorchester is £2.40 for three hours without the permit and £6.30 for a full day. Dorset Council also lists a Flexi Stay permit at £305 a year and monthly permits at £29 for residents, businesses and workers.
Parksy paid spaces around Dorchester and Dorset County Hospital
When free parking around Dorchester is full, Parksy lists a driveway space near Dorset County Hospital for £3.50 a day, 4.4 miles away.
Parksy also lists a space at the Wessex Royale Hotel in Dorchester for £3.50 a day, 5.3 miles away, and a space near the Royal Terrace for £3.50 a day, 5.4 miles away. The Joseph Weld & Trimar Hospice option costs £3.10 a day and is 5.6 miles away, while the space near Winterbourne Hospital is £3.10 a day and 5.8 miles away. The Poundbury Clinic space is the lowest-priced listed option at £2.60 a day, 5.9 miles away, and suits drivers heading to Poundbury rather than seeking a town-centre bay.
Dorset parking fines, payment deadlines and challenges
Dorset Council enforces on-street restrictions and council-managed car parks under its civil parking enforcement arrangements, including restrictions operating on Sundays and Bank Holidays (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk). A Penalty Charge Notice can result from ignoring a sign, exceeding a permitted stay or parking in a restricted location, while double yellow lines prohibit parking at any time unless a specific concession applies.
The council’s parking-fine service handles payment and the formal challenge process, allowing a driver to contest the notice rather than paying it immediately. Blue Badge concessions do not permit parking in loading-ban areas, permit-holder-only bays or other locations specifically excluded by the signs.
