Dundee has no general published list of free city-centre car parks. On-street charging applies Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm and Sunday from 1pm to 6pm, so a legally parked bay outside those periods is not within the published charging times (dundeecity.gov.uk).

Free Parking Options Around Dundee City Centre
Dundee City’s official parking information identifies charging periods rather than a general list of free city-centre car parks. On-street charging applies on Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm and on Sunday from 1pm to 6pm, so a legally parked space outside those periods is not within the published on-street charging times (dundeecity.gov.uk). The rule varies by location, and the sign or meter at the individual bay controls the stay.
Streets outside the ring road include Earl Grey Place, South Tay Street, Perth Road and Hilltown. The council lists different paid stay bands for these streets, so an apparently empty bay is not automatically unrestricted. The Traffic Regulation Order map identifies waiting restrictions and movement orders by road, including restrictions that only appear when the map is zoomed in (dundeecity.gov.uk).
Dundee City Restrictions That Can Turn a Free Stay Into a Ticket
Dundee City’s charging page says car parks operate with charging hours between 8am and 8pm from Monday to Sunday, while individual charging boards, meters and signs set the charging period at each location (dundeecity.gov.uk). Dundee City car parks allow entry and exit 24 hours a day, but all-day access does not make a stay free or remove the restrictions displayed at the site.
Dundee City’s pavement-parking ban applies to every street, including grass verges, and one wheel on the pavement can result in a Penalty Charge Notice (dundeecity.gov.uk). The ban also covers parking across dropped-kerb crossing points, and the council states that there are no Blue Badge exceptions to the pavement-parking rules.
Dundee Alternatives When Free Bays Disappear
Greenmarket rail-station on-street parking is another named option, but the council lists it as paid, with an all-day station charge of £20 (dundeecity.gov.uk). The South Crichton Street parking area east of the V&A is also paid, with a 0 to 4 hour charge of £9.
For a longer visit, Dundee City’s variable-stay multi-storey car parks list a weekend charge of £4 per day. Weekday or other stays are charged by duration, including £4.20 for 0 to 3 hours, £6 for 3 to 4 hours, £7 for 4 to 5 hours and £8.50 for 5 to 6 hours (dundeecity.gov.uk). Football matches create an additional restriction: vehicles not registered with the council’s Parking Team should not be parked or remain within the matchday zone while games are being played.
Dundee City Parking Penalties and How to Deal With Them
Dundee City Council sets a parking Penalty Charge Notice at £100, reduced to £50 when paid within 14 days of issue (dundeecity.gov.uk).
Dundee City’s online penalty portal accepts a PCN number to show the contravention and make payment (pcnportal.dundeecity.gov.uk). A driver contesting a notice must write to the Parking Team at Dundee House, 50 North Lindsay Street, Dundee DD1 1LS; the council’s Traffic Regulation Order map states that the map itself cannot be used to contest a fine (dundeecity.gov.uk).
