Parking Near Fairfax
Free parking options in Fairfax, Virginia’s Old Town area
Old Town Fairfax has free public parking, with dark-blue locations available all day and light-blue lots available in the evenings and at weekends (oldtownfairfax.org). The Old Town Fairfax parking map is the clearest guide to these colour-coded public spaces, so drivers looking for a free stay should target the dark-blue locations first when they need daytime parking.
Public roads in Fairfax generally allow parking unless a restriction applies (fairfaxcounty.gov). Fairfax’s public-road parking includes no general charge in the cited authority guidance, but a road can still be unsuitable where signs, permit controls or safety restrictions apply. The City of Fairfax also identifies residential permit parking districts, where access is managed through resident or visitor permits rather than being a general free-parking option (fairfaxva.gov).
Fairfax restrictions that can turn a free space into a contravention
Fairfax public-road parking is allowed unless otherwise restricted, but vehicles cannot park within 10 feet of a driveway, on a pavement, within 15 feet of a hydrant, or within 30 feet of a stop sign (fairfaxcounty.gov). Parking is also prohibited in or within 20 feet of an intersection, in or within 20 feet of a designated crosswalk, and in travel, turn or bike lanes.
Fairfax roads also restrict parking near bus stops: vehicles cannot stop within 60 feet on the approach side or 10 feet on the departure side of a stop designated by Fairfax Connector, WMATA or CUE (fairfaxcounty.gov). Fairfax residential permit parking districts are created for controlled residential areas, and the City of Fairfax manages resident and visitor permits for those districts (fairfaxva.gov). A properly designated accessible bay is reserved for a vehicle displaying a valid accessible plate or placard, with enforcement possible on properly posted public or private locations.
Fairfax parking enforcement and the cost of leaving a vehicle wrongly
Fairfax County police enforce several public-road parking restrictions, including accessible-space rules, hydrant clearances, bus-stop clearances and abandoned-vehicle provisions (fairfaxcounty.gov). A vehicle left on a road for 15 days without moving at least 300 feet is treated as unattended unless it is within 500 feet of the property where it is registered, and police may tow a vehicle left on a road for four or more days.
The practical consequence named by the authority is enforcement action, including towing in the circumstances described, rather than a published Fairfax fine figure. Drivers should therefore avoid blocked driveways, pavements, hydrants, intersections, crosswalks, bus stops and travel lanes even where the road itself has no parking charge.
