Parking Near Heartlands
Free parking at Heartlands Hospital and its visitor entrance
Heartlands Hospital’s designated public car park beside the main entrance is the principal place for visitors arriving by car. The hospital says the car park has limited capacity, so a space is not guaranteed, particularly during busy periods (uhb.nhs.uk). Drivers attending a short drop-off or pick-up can use the 30-minute ticket, which allows free entrance and exit for up to 30 minutes. The ticket does not require payment at the machine, because the driver inserts it at the exit barrier.
Blue Badge holders can park in the main visitors’ car park and receive a free exit ticket after showing the badge at main reception (uhb.nhs.uk). The free visitor arrangement is therefore tied to the 30-minute drop-off or pick-up ticket or to Blue Badge eligibility, rather than being unrestricted all-day parking for every visitor. The hospital also provides a 20-exit card costing £10 for chemotherapy, Palliative Care, Renal and Ward 26 patients and their visitors, subject to a signed form from the eligible ward or department.
Heartlands Hospital conditions that keep short-stay parking free
Heartlands Hospital’s free 30-minute arrangement applies to drop-off or pick-up journeys, and the ticket allows entrance and exit within that period (uhb.nhs.uk). A driver staying beyond the permitted period cannot treat the short-stay ticket as free parking for a longer appointment or visit. The hospital instructs drivers not to pay until they are ready to leave, because an underpaid ticket will be rejected by the exit barrier machine.
Heartlands Hospital’s Blue Badge concession applies in the main visitors’ car park, with the badge shown at main reception so reception can issue a free exit ticket (uhb.nhs.uk). Heartlands Hospital staff parking is separate from public visitor parking: the Trust introduced a tariff of 1% of salary, capped at a salary of £70,000, with charges ranging from £15 per month to £67.50 per month and automatic salary deduction. The tariff also applies to part-time staff proportionally, so staff permits are not a general free-parking option.
Finding a lower-cost option when Heartlands spaces are full
Heartlands Hospital advises alternative travel arrangements where possible because its public car park has limited capacity and spaces cannot be guaranteed (uhb.nhs.uk). Drivers with appointments are advised to allow plenty of time to locate a space and walk to the appointment, with the hospital identifying the busiest periods as the time when delays are especially likely. This makes the main visitor car park a poor place to rely on for an unplanned long stay.
Eligible Heartlands Hospital patients and visitors can buy a 20-exit card for £10, valid for 90 days, when the journey relates to chemotherapy, Palliative Care, Renal or Ward 26 care (uhb.nhs.uk). The card is not transferable and can be used only on the Heartlands Hospital site. Staff have a separate off-site provision on Yardley Green Road, with 784 staff spaces, and a winter shuttle bus operates between November and February; those spaces and the shuttle are for staff parking rather than general visitor use.
