Somerville has no general free-parking option on ordinary residential streets. A vehicle in a residential zone needs a residential parking permit, temporary parking permit or visitor pass, or it may be ticketed (somervillema.gov). New residents can obtain a free temporary permit for up to 30 days. Residents aged 65 or older and residents with a disabled placard or plate can receive resident and visitor passes without charge.
Parking Near Somerville
Somerville streets offer no general free-parking option
Somerville drivers should not treat ordinary residential streets as unrestricted free parking. The Somerville Parking Department says vehicles in a residential zone need a residential parking permit, temporary parking permit or visitor pass, and vehicles without one are subject to ticketing (somervillema.gov). The authority divides Somerville into eight zones, so a street location must be matched to its zone before parking.
A new resident can obtain a temporary permit free for up to 30 days, while a resident parking permit costs $50 per vehicle. The free temporary permit is for new residents, not a general visitor concession. Residents aged 65 or older and residents with a disabled placard or plate pay no resident-permit fee, but the permit requirement still governs where the vehicle may stand. Drivers should also distinguish accessible spaces from general parking: permanent accessible parking spaces are available at no cost only to drivers with disabilities who lack off-street parking.
Somerville permits decide whether a street space remains free
Somerville residential streets are controlled by permit status rather than by a blanket free-parking rule. The Somerville Parking Department says a vehicle in a residential zone must display a residential parking permit, temporary parking permit or visitor pass; otherwise the vehicle is subject to ticketing (somervillema.gov). The city has eight zones, and each permit can be valid for up to one year depending on its purchase date and the zone’s expiration date.
A free temporary permit lasts up to 30 days for a new resident. Somerville residents aged 65 or older and residents with a disabled placard or plate can receive resident and visitor passes without charge, while other residents pay $35 for a two-day visitor pass or $50 for a three-day visitor pass. The authority also provides free military parking permits for military personnel on orders living in Somerville.
Somerville permit demand makes paid lots the practical fallback
Free on-street space in Somerville is not guaranteed even when a driver holds the relevant permit. The Somerville Parking Department expressly says that obtaining a resident permit gives the ability to park on city streets but does not guarantee parking availability (somervillema.gov). That makes permit demand especially important when residential spaces are occupied.
When street parking is unavailable, Somerville’s named paid options include on-street parking and Magoun Square lots at $300 a year, and Davis Square lots at $100 a month. Davis Square packages are available for three, six and 12 months. These are parking products for drivers who need regular access, rather than free alternatives for a short visit. Residents of new housing developments in a Transit Area are not eligible for on-street parking permits, and the authority defines a Transit Area as within ½ mile of MBTA Red, Orange or Green Line services (somervillema.gov).
Parksy spaces near Somerville in Pakuranga and East Tamaki
When Somerville street parking is full, Parksy lists a driveway space in Pakuranga 5.6 km away for $7 a day. These off-street spaces suit drivers who want a booked daily alternative rather than another search for a residential street.
East Tamaki provides three further priced choices. Highbrook Medical Parking is 5.8 km away at $2 an hour, making it suitable for a shorter stay. A driveway space in East Tamaki is 6.3 km away at $7 a day, which fits a full-day requirement. Parksy also lists parking in Panmure near Dunkirk Rd Park, 6.5 km away at $3.50 a day, and undercover parking in Saint Heliers 8.8 km away at $4.90 a day. The priced options give Somerville drivers a choice between hourly parking, daily spaces and undercover parking.
Somerville tickets follow permit violations and can gain late fees
That rule applies to the vehicle’s permit status, so a driver cannot rely on an apparently open residential space as free parking.
The authority’s Somerville page says late fees may be added to the ticket amount. Drivers can avoid that exposure by using the correct permit category: a new resident may use a free temporary permit for up to 30 days, and residents with a disabled placard or plate or residents aged 65 or older may receive resident and visitor passes without charge.

Can I park free on a residential street in Somerville?
Not generally. The Somerville Parking Department requires vehicles in residential zones to display a residential parking permit, temporary parking permit or visitor pass, and vehicles without one are subject to ticketing (somervillema.gov). Somerville has eight zones, so drivers must match the street to its zone. A permit also does not guarantee that a space will be available.

A new Somerville resident can obtain a temporary permit free for up to 30 days. This is for new residents, not a general visitor concession. The Somerville Parking Department also provides free military parking permits for military personnel on orders living in Somerville. Other residents may need a resident permit or visitor pass for residential-zone parking.
Do older residents or drivers with disabilities get free parking permits?
Somerville residents aged 65 or older and residents with a disabled placard or plate can receive resident and visitor passes without charge. The permit requirement still governs where the vehicle may stand. Permanent accessible parking spaces are available at no cost only to drivers with disabilities who lack off-street parking.
What happens if I park without the required Somerville permit?
A vehicle in a Somerville residential zone without a residential parking permit, temporary parking permit or visitor pass is subject to ticketing (somervillema.gov). Late fees may be added to the ticket amount. Drivers should use the correct permit category, including the free temporary permit available to a new resident for up to 30 days.
