Free two-hour streets and evening parking in downtown Mobile
Downtown Mobile has free on-street parking on certain streets for a two-hour limit, giving visitors a practical option near businesses and attractions during shorter visits (cityofmobile.gov). The City of Mobile describes the remaining downtown metered parking as $1 an hour, so the free spaces are the useful first choice for errands that fit inside the posted limit.
Downtown Mobile’s metered spaces are free after 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and all day on weekends, according to Mobile’s parking operator (mobilealparking.com). Free handicapped parking spaces are available on Saint Louis Street on the north side of the U.S. District Courthouse at 155 Saint Joseph Street, but those spaces are reserved for vehicles displaying a qualifying disabled permit (alsb.uscourts.gov).
Mobile limits, permit spaces, and parade restrictions that affect free parking
Downtown Mobile’s free on-street spaces carry a two-hour limit on the streets identified by the city, so a free space is not an all-day option (cityofmobile.gov). Metered spaces are enforceable from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mobile’s Mardi Gras restrictions override ordinary street parking on sections marked with gold and purple signs, beginning two hours before each parade, continuing during the parade, and ending two hours afterward (cityofmobile.gov). Bayou Street and Scott Street are closed to on-street parking between Government Street and Congress Street during the stated Mardi Gras restriction period, and violating vehicles may be towed. Free handicapped spaces on Saint Louis Street are for disabled permit holders, not general parking (alsb.uscourts.gov).
Mardi Gras and downtown demand make Mobile’s free spaces disappear
Mobile’s Mardi Gras parades affect both availability and legality downtown. The city says some on-street parking is impacted throughout the Mardi Gras season, and vehicles in areas marked with gold and purple Mardi Gras parking signs may be towed when restrictions apply (cityofmobile.gov). The city reports nearly 7,000 spaces downtown across Mobile County, the City of Mobile, and private operators, but those spaces have different rates and conditions.
When free spaces are full, Mobile’s public and private surface lots and parking decks provide the main named alternatives. The City of Mobile says rates vary among the decks and lots, while the remaining downtown meters cost $1 an hour (cityofmobile.gov). During Mardi Gras, the parking deck at 200 S. Claiborne Street charges $15 to $30 for 24-hour event parking depending on demand, with prepaid parking starting at $15 and drive-up parking starting at $25. That deck suits drivers who need guaranteed event parking rather than a short free street stay.

Parksy lists a secure commercial garage in Mobile, 0.3 miles away, at $21 a day. Parksy also lists a secure covered lot on Main Street in Whistler, 6 miles away, at $3 an hour, for drivers willing to park farther from downtown.
Towing and payment consequences for restricted Mobile parking
Mobile may tow vehicles that violate gold and purple Mardi Gras parking restrictions, and vehicles parked on the restricted sections of Bayou Street and Scott Street may also be towed (cityofmobile.gov). The city’s temporary Mardi Gras impound lot is under the I-10 overpass on Water Street near the Canal Street intersection, and vehicles are moved to the MPD Impound Lot at 1251B Virginia Street when the temporary facility closes at 10 p.m.
Mobile accepts cash, debit cards, Mastercard, Discover, and Visa credit cards at the temporary impound lot (cityofmobile.gov). For information about a vehicle towed before 10 p.m. on a parade day, the city lists 251-208-2584; for tows after 10 p.m. and on non-parade days, the city lists 251-208-2585.
