San Bernardino County’s Park & Ride lots are free and do not require permits, and most lots are limited to day use only (gosbcta.com). These lots suit commuters who can leave a car during the day instead of taking it into a busy commercial area. Fontana drivers with oversized or non-motorized vehicles can also obtain a free temporary parking permit from the Fontana Police Department when the city’s specific residential conditions are met, including parking contiguous with the requesting resident’s home and a maximum permit duration of 72 hours (fontanaca.gov).
Fontana’s free spaces fill fastest around commuting and travel periods
Fontana’s Park & Ride lots are the lowest-cost named alternative when ordinary curb spaces are occupied because San Bernardino County lists them as free and permit-free for day use (gosbcta.com). The lots are particularly suited to drivers switching from a private vehicle to a regional commute, while street parking remains better for a short stop close to a destination.
Fontana’s city permit system provides a narrowly defined free option for an oversized vehicle or non-motorized vehicle at a resident’s home, but the permit cannot be used as general public parking. The Fontana Police Department allows no more than six permits to a resident or specific oversized vehicle in a calendar month, requires 48 consecutive hours between permits, and prohibits consecutive permit periods (fontanaca.gov). A qualifying permit lasts no more than 72 hours, so it is not a long-term substitute when regular spaces are full.

Fontana street and oversized-vehicle rules that affect free parking
Fontana public streets are generally free for residents and visitors, but a posted restriction, curb marking, or permit condition can change whether a space is usable (prked.com). Fontana City Code Section 17-162 prohibits parking an oversized vehicle or non-motorized vehicle on any public street, public right-of-way, or residential street for longer than four consecutive hours (fontanaca.gov). The four-hour rule belongs specifically to oversized and non-motorized vehicles, not every ordinary passenger car using a Fontana street.
The Fontana Police Department’s temporary oversized-vehicle permit is free only for a Fontana resident or bona fide guest of a city resident, and the vehicle must be parked on the same side of the street in front of the residence, or on the residence side of a corner lot (fontanaca.gov). The vehicle cannot be used for overnight camping, lodging, or accommodation, and semi trucks and tractor trailers cannot receive this permit. The permit does not exceed 72 hours and cannot be issued for consecutive periods.
Fontana oversized-vehicle violations can reach $500
Fontana Police may cite an oversized-vehicle or non-motorized-vehicle violation immediately under City Code Section 17-162 (fontanaca.gov). The first violation within one year carries a fine not exceeding $100, the second violation within one year carries a fine not exceeding $200, and each additional violation within one year carries a fine not exceeding $500.
The Fontana penalties apply to the city’s oversized-vehicle and non-motorized-vehicle street-parking prohibition, rather than establishing one fine for every kind of parking mistake in Fontana. The Fontana Police Department lists 17005 Upland Avenue, Fontana, CA 92335, and (909) 350-7799 for contact about the ordinance and temporary permits (fontanaca.gov). A qualifying permit can prevent the four-hour oversized-vehicle restriction from applying during its approved period, but the permit conditions and maximum duration still govern the vehicle.
