Parking Near Lafayette, Indiana
Free Parking at Columbia Street Garage and Lafayette’s Downtown Streets
Lafayette’s Columbia Street Parking Garage at 18 N. 5th St. provides the clearest general free option for downtown drivers. Visitor parking is available 24/7, with free parking from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. The garage entrance is near North 5th St. and South St (lafayette.in.gov).
Lafayette also has 1,200 downtown on-street locations, while the city code allows designated short-term parking zones with 30-minute limits and restrictions set by the Parking Commission. Those spaces are available to any driver during the applicable period, but they are not unrestricted all-day parking (lafayette.in.gov).
How Lafayette Time Limits and Block Rules Affect Free Street Parking
Lafayette’s short-term zones can have different restrictions because the Parking Commission sets their locations, hours, vehicle types, and permitted uses. A 30-minute space therefore remains free only within the posted short-term conditions (lafayette.in.gov).
Lafayette’s parking citation guidance says signs near the beginning and end of a block identify the enforced time limit for the entire block. In a two-hour zone, Lafayette allows one two-hour parking period per day on the same side of the street within that block, so moving to another position on that block does not reset the free period. The same relocation rule applies in a three-hour zone (lafayette.in.gov).
Lafayette Downtown Demand and the Cheapest Named Fallback
Lafayette’s Columbia Street Parking Garage is a practical fallback when downtown on-street spaces are occupied, because the garage offers 405 spaces, operates 24/7, and includes an electric-car charging station. Its free evening and weekend periods make it especially useful outside weekday daytime demand (lafayette.in.gov).
Lafayette’s city parking information identifies the downtown garage as an affordable, well-lit facility with no snow to shovel, while the city’s parking program specifically encourages longer-term users to choose less-proximate off-street spaces so convenient on-street spaces remain available for visitors and shoppers (lafayette.in.gov).
Lafayette Parking Citation Costs and Collection Steps
Lafayette charges $20 for exceeding a time limit, violating a loading zone, parking outside space markings, parking against the flow of traffic, or parking in a prohibited space. Lafayette charges $50 for parking in a fire lane or within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and $100 for parking in a space reserved for handicap parking (lafayette.in.gov).
Lafayette citations are due within 30 days, and certain fees increase incrementally as shown on the citation. Lafayette sends citations unpaid after 120 days to Citation Collection Services LLC. After three citations remain unpaid past 30 days and written notice is provided, Lafayette may install a wheel lock, adding a $25 fee; unpaid citations and fees after 24 hours can lead to towing (lafayette.in.gov).
