Free street parking after meters stop in New Orleans
New Orleans has free metered parking on Sundays and on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Mardi Gras, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The City’s parking meters cover the French Quarter, Marigny, Central Business District, Warehouse District, and other parts of New Orleans, so a metered curb can become a useful free option outside its charging schedule (nola.gov).
Drivers looking for free street parking can try North Rampart Street, Elysian Fields Avenue, and Independence Street. These streets are named local options for free parking, but the available spaces can be affected by signs, rush-hour controls, events, or residential restrictions (sixt.com). New Orleans City Park also designates parking for City Park users, while parking on grass, off roadways, or on paved and unpaved jogging or bike paths is prohibited (neworleanscitypark.org).

Parksy lists a covered space at Unipark Garage on Roosevelt Way, 246 yards away, for $16 a day. Cheaper New Orleans options when curb spaces fill
Free spaces are hardest to find during Mardi Gras, parade season, special events, and busy downtown periods. New Orleans warns that event restrictions can lead to towing, and parade-route restrictions begin two hours before a parade starts (nola.gov). Meters covered with yellow bags for special events are also subject to a $40 violation.
(uspark.net) For a short neighborhood errand, New Orleans Parking says its lots provide the first hour free, so that offer can be useful when the visit fits within one hour (neworleansparking.com).
New Orleans meter, permit, and curb rules that affect free parking
A New Orleans metered space is free on Sundays and the listed city holidays, but the space remains subject to its posted restrictions. The City operates meters Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and rush-hour zones can prohibit parking at meters from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m (nola.gov).
New Orleans residential parking permit zones are reserved for residents with valid permits, and a driver without the required permit can receive a $75 fine for parking there more than two hours. The City also prohibits parking on neutral grounds, the grassy medians, unless a temporary city restriction changes that rule. A vehicle in a handicapped zone without a proper permit faces a $500 fine (nola.gov).
New Orleans parking fines, towing, and citation payment
New Orleans charges a $30 non-payment fee for parking in a metered space during operating hours without paying. The City lists $40 fines for obstructing fire lanes, parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, stopping in bus or taxi zones, parking against the flow of traffic, blocking a driveway within three feet, and parking on a sidewalk. Parking within 20 feet of an intersection, crosswalk, or stop sign carries a $40 fine and is towable (nola.gov).
Unpaid outstanding violations or traffic-camera violations can make a vehicle eligible for booting, while parade-route violations can make a vehicle eligible for towing. Drivers can pay, view, or check a citation through the New Orleans Parking Portal, which also provides citation photos and details (dsparkingportal.com). Drivers challenging a ticket should use the City’s citation process rather than leaving the balance unpaid.
