Parking Near Columbia Heights
Free garages and lots around Columbia Heights City Hall
Columbia Heights City Hall provides three free parking options for visitors: the City Hall Garage at 3989 Central Ave NE, the Van Buren St NE Ramp north of 40th Ave NE between Van Buren St NE and Central Ave NE, and the Municipal Parking Lot south of 40th Ave NE between Van Buren St NE and Central Ave NE (columbiaheightsmn.gov). The City Hall Garage opens during business hours and for scheduled City meetings, with no payment required.
Drivers should use the garage, ramp, or municipal lot rather than parking on 40th Ave along City Hall or in the lot north of the new City Hall. Columbia Heights states that vehicles left in those restricted locations may be towed at the owner's expense. The free City Hall options are therefore most useful for city business and meetings, while ordinary street parking remains subject to the city's six-hour limit.
Columbia Heights street limits, zones, and overnight restrictions
Columbia Heights limits parking on any one city street or roadway to six continuous hours under City Ordinance 1490-7.205(A); a vehicle left longer may receive a citation or be impounded (columbiaheightsmn.gov). Gould Ave NE and Peters Pl have additional marked controls: red-and-white areas are no parking except for emergency vehicles, while yellow-and-white areas allow three-hour customer parking and prohibit parking from 2 am to 6 am.
City park lots in Columbia Heights prohibit parking from 11 pm to 6 am, and posted time limits still apply. The city also prohibits street parking from 2 am to 6 am between Nov 15 and March 15 unless a permit has been issued. Between March 16 and May 1, the overnight ban applies when snow has accumulated to two inches or more on the roadway. After a snowfall of two or more inches, street parking is prohibited until the road is plowed curb-to-curb, even for a permit holder.
Snow, city parks, and the times free spaces disappear
From Nov 1 through March 31, the city prohibits vehicles and trailers on public roads between 2 am and 6 am without a Columbia Heights Police Department permit, and snow-related restrictions can suspend permits (columbiaheightsmn.gov). A winter advisory also states that parking is barred after a snowfall of more than three inches until snow is cleared, with permits void when 3.5 inches has fallen on the roadway.
Drivers visiting a city park must also account for the 11 pm to 6 am park-lot closure. Columbia Heights says permits are available online, while temporary permit applicants can visit the Police Department at 825 41st Ave NE during normal business hours.
