Parking Near Newark
Free Newark street parking after meters stop charging
Newark’s metered street spaces are generally free of charge on Sundays, giving drivers a city street option for Sunday visits without feeding a meter (spotangels.com). Newark’s meters generally operate Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., so a metered space can also be free after 6 p.m. on those days (Newark Parking Authority). The free period applies to metered spaces, not to a loading area, bus stop, curb restriction, or permit-only space.
The Newark Parking Authority generally enforces non-moving parking violations Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m (newarkparkingauthority.org). A driver looking for free parking downtown should therefore target a legal metered space outside the operating period or on Sunday, while keeping the vehicle within any posted limit and away from restrictions. Newark Airport has separate short-term and long-term parking facilities with published rates, so airport parking should not be treated as a free Newark street-parking option (newarkairport.com).
Grove Street Station is Newark’s weekend park-and-ride option
Grove Street Station offers free parking for NJ TRANSIT customers from 12:01 a.m. Saturday until the end of the service day on Sunday (NJ TRANSIT). The concession belongs to Grove Street Station and to NJ TRANSIT customers, so it is not a general free lot for unrelated parking.
Newark’s annual 24 Hrs. of Peace event uses Halsey and Market Streets from Friday at 6 p.m. through Saturday at 6 p.m., creating a specific event period in which nearby curb space can be affected (newarknj.gov).
Parksy parking near Newark’s downtown garages and LM Academy
Parksy lists a priced LM Academy space in Newark for $13 an hour, 303 yards away. That space suits a driver who needs a short, close-in stay after free curb spaces have filled, particularly when paying by the hour is preferable to taking a full-day garage rate.
Parksy also lists a priced garage at 111 Mulberry Street for $25 a day, 304 yards away. The garage suits a driver staying through much of the day, because the listed charge is daily rather than hourly. These nearby paid spaces give drivers a practical downtown fallback when a legal free meter is unavailable or when a visit extends beyond the free street-parking period.
