Parking Near Old City
Free street parking around Old City, New York
Old City, New York has free parking on Sundays at metered spaces, giving drivers a no-charge option for short visits when a metered bay is available (sixt.com). The Sunday concession applies to metered spots, rather than to every curb space in Old City, so a driver still needs to distinguish a meter from a loading, standing, or prohibited area.
New York City streets also have free parking during off-hours where posted regulations permit parking, including locations governed by a “No parking between 2 am and 6 am” restriction (sixt.com). The restriction belongs to the signed street or zone, so the usable free period depends on the exact curb signs beside the vehicle.
Old City restrictions that can end a free stay
New York City metered spaces are free on Sundays, but the Sunday rule applies specifically to metered spots and does not cancel other posted restrictions (sixt.com). A curb carrying a separate no-parking, no-standing, loading, or overnight restriction remains governed by that restriction, even when a meter would otherwise be free.
New York City off-hour parking depends on the regulation displayed for the particular street. A sign stating “No parking between 2 am and 6 am” defines the prohibited period for that location, while other signed locations can use different hours (sixt.com). Drivers using a free Sunday meter or an off-hour space must leave before the applicable restriction begins, because the free period does not create permission to remain outside the signed parking window.
Park-and-ride when Old City free spaces disappear
New York State park-and-ride locations are usually free and are intended for commuters, carpoolers, bus users, train users, shoppers, and recreational visitors (dot.ny.gov).
New York State park-and-ride sites are available along major highways, near express and commuter bus services, and near commuter rail lines including Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road (dot.ny.gov). The New York State park-and-ride map also describes these lots as typically free and first come, while noting that some locations require a permit or fee (511nyrideshare.org).
