Parking Near Salem
Free parking at Salem’s downtown garages and streets
Salem provides all-day free parking in designated areas of three downtown parking garages, giving drivers a free option when a marked garage section is available (cityofsalem.net). The named garages include Chemeketa Parkade at 300 Commercial St. NE and Liberty Square. Free parking in those structures is not presented as applying to every stall, so the designated areas matter when choosing a space.
Salem’s Downtown Parking District also includes free customer parking spaces in parkades and on streets, according to Salem Main Street Association. The association identifies 3,500 free customer spaces across the district (salemmainstreetassociation.org). Street parking changed after July 10, 2025, when downtown paid parking began, while Sundays and holidays remain free under the reported downtown arrangement (statesmanjournal.com). The garage option is therefore more dependable for a longer visit than assuming every downtown curb space is free.
Salem time limits, permits, and enforcement hours
Salem parking meters use posted signs to set the time limit for each location, and the city lists a maximum meter stay of 12 hours (cityofsalem.net). The city’s meter information lists payment of $1.50 for one hour and $18 for 12 hours, so an unpaid space is not automatically free merely because a driver plans a short stop. A driver using a designated free garage area has a different arrangement from a driver using a metered downtown curb.
Salem’s residential parking districts restrict non-permit vehicles to 90 minutes once per day within monitored hours, while monitored hours vary by district (statesmanjournal.com). A resident permit does not make a district-wide space a general free-parking option because the concession belongs to vehicles authorized by that district. Salem Parking Services responds to parking violations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays (cityofsalem.net). The city’s posted sign, meter, garage designation, or residential-district rule determines whether a particular space remains free.
Salem alternatives when downtown free spaces are gone
Salem’s downtown parking supply becomes harder to use during busy shopping periods and events, when customer spaces in the Downtown Parking District are sought by visitors at the same time. That figure covers the district overall, not a guarantee that a space will be open beside a particular destination.
Salem’s city-owned downtown garages provide the named fallback for drivers who find curb parking unavailable, with free parking in designated areas rather than a universal free rate throughout every garage (cityofsalem.net). These choices keep the decision within Salem’s downtown parking network without treating every garage stall or street bay as unrestricted.
Parksy monthly spaces around Salem and Keizer
Parksy lists monthly spaces for drivers who need a reserved alternative after Salem’s free downtown supply is occupied. A monthly parking space on Eastland Ave in Salem costs $90 a month and is 5.6 miles from the city center reference point used by the listing. The Eastland Ave option suits a Salem driver who values a monthly arrangement over searching for a short-stay curb space.
Parksy also lists a secure RV and camper storage space in Salem for $47 a month, located 8.1 miles away. In nearby Keizer, Parksy lists outdoor parking with 24/7 access for $131.50 a month, secure gated parking for $200 a month, and RV parking for $175 a month, with each Keizer listing 4.5 miles away. The Keizer listings give drivers additional monthly locations outside central Salem, while the Salem listings provide choices within the city. These are priced alternatives for longer stays, not free substitutes for a designated downtown garage area.
Salem parking fines and how the city handles them
Oregon administrative parking rules set the overtime-parking fine at $25, making an expired time limit a direct cost even when the original space was inexpensive or free for a limited period (secure.sos.state.or.us). The same rules set a $30 fine for failing to display a valid permit, so a vehicle in a permit-controlled Salem district can be cited when the required authorization is not shown. Parking in a disabled space carries a $450 fine under the Oregon rule.
Salem provides a city page for paying a ticket or fine, and the city adds a $10 late fee to a fine when payment is late (cityofsalem.net). A driver disputing a citation must use Salem’s municipal-court process rather than treating an unpaid ticket as a parking extension. The city’s ticket page also states that an additional fee of up to 25% of the unpaid case balance can apply.
