Parking Near Charleston
Free Charleston Street Parking After 6 P.m. and on Sundays
City of Charleston parking meters are active and require payment Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding Sunday and official city holidays, so metered spaces are free outside those payment hours when no other restriction applies (charleston-sc.gov). Sunday is the clearest citywide free-parking opportunity because the meter requirement excludes that day.
Free parking does not apply to every curb in downtown Charleston. Street parking on King Street between Spring and John streets is prohibited from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights (charleston-sc.gov). A driver seeking free parking should therefore target an available metered space outside that restricted King Street section, rather than treating every downtown curb as available after the meter payment period ends.
Parksy Parking Near Downtown Charleston When Free Spaces Are Full
Parksy lists two priced Charleston parking lots close to the city center: an affordable parking lot 123 yards away for $10 a day and another Charleston lot 165 yards away for $10 a day. These lots suit visitors who need a full-day space after free curb parking has filled, especially when a meter space is unavailable near the destination.
Parksy also lists a secure 24/7 private parking space in downtown Charleston, 252 yards away, for $50 a week. That space is better suited to a multi-day stay than to a brief visit. For hourly parking, the Visitor’s Center Garage, Camden Garage, and a Camden Garage space are each 0.2 miles away and cost $1 an hour.
Charleston Parking Tickets Cost $25 for Exceeding the Allowed Time
Charleston parking tickets cost $25 when a vehicle is parked longer than allowed (abcnews4.com). The city can issue a citation when a driver exceeds the permitted stay, even when the original parking session began during a free period. The published penalty figure makes an overstay more expensive than using Charleston’s $1 per half hour garage options.
The City of Charleston lets drivers pay a parking citation online, in person, or by mail. Online payment requires the citation number or license tag number and a valid debit or credit card, while card transactions add a $2.50 service charge per item. A driver who wants to appeal must make an appointment with an adjudications officer within 30 days of the ticket date.
