Fairfax restrictions that can turn a free road space into a violation
Fairfax County Residential Permit Parking Districts allow communities to petition for restrictions, so a residential street may require a permit even though ordinary public-road parking is generally allowed.
Fairfax County prohibits parking in travel, turn, and bike lanes, and vehicles must face the direction of travel. Fairfax County treats a vehicle left for 15 days without moving at least 300 feet as unattended, unless it is within 500 feet of the property where it is registered. Fairfax County police may tow a vehicle left on a road for 4 or more days. Fairfax County requires a valid accessible license plate or placard in a designated accessible space, and police can enforce the rule on properly posted public or private locations.
Fairfax busy periods and the free-parking fallback
Old Town Fairfax is the most useful named free-parking area for visitors, but its all-day spaces are limited to the locations shown on the Old Town Fairfax parking map. Drivers heading to the historic center should identify one of those locations before arrival rather than rely on an unmarked residential street.
Fairfax County's Community Parking District program provides a lower-risk fallback for ordinary cars only where a public street is not otherwise restricted, because CPD rules target watercraft, trailers, motor homes, vehicles with three or more axles, vehicles rated at 12,000 or more pounds, vehicles for 16 or more passengers, and vehicles carrying hazardous materials (fairfaxcounty.gov). A CPD does not restrict parking on private residential lots, but Fairfax County says prohibited vehicles can be fined and towed at the owner's expense.
