Free street parking and after-hours lots in Madison, Wisconsin
This is the clearest general free option for a visitor, provided the street has no sign imposing a shorter limit or another restriction.
Many campus surface lots allow free parking from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, and those lots are free all day Saturday and Sunday (transportation.wisc.edu). The free period applies to the campus lots covered by the visitor-parking guidance, rather than to every Madison lot.
Madison's downtown streets also include metered spaces that are free on Sundays, while meters are generally enforced from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m (spotangels.com).
Madison park-and-ride choices when free spaces fill
Free spaces become harder to find when downtown Madison attracts visitors, campus activity, or special events. The city's downtown area contains more than 5,000 public parking spaces, including 1,300 on-street metered spaces, but that supply is spread across a busy central area (visitdowntownmadison.com).
A driver visiting campus during weekday daytime hours should not treat the after-hours arrangement as an all-day option.
Madison downtown parking also includes metered spaces for drivers who need a central alternative to searching for an unrestricted street.
Madison street limits, enforcement hours, and campus restrictions
Designated streets may instead carry posted one- or two-hour limits, and the city provides separate guidance for drivers seeking to exceed those limits through residential parking rules (cityofmadison.com).
Madison parking enforcement applies to 24/7 metered and non-metered on-street parking restrictions from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (cityofmadison.com). The enforcement schedule does not turn a signed time limit into an unrestricted space, so a two-hour bay remains governed by its posted limit.
Parksy garages and lots near Madison destinations
Parksy lists two secure covered parking garages in Madison, each 0.4 miles from the relevant destination and priced at $250 a month. A covered garage is suited to drivers who need a nearby paid space instead of spending time searching for a free street bay.
Parksy also lists secure car storage in Madison with 24/7 access, 4.6 miles away, for $46 a month. The 24/7 access wording makes that space a practical paid option for a vehicle that needs access outside ordinary daytime parking hours.
Two Parksy outdoor lot spaces in Madison are 6.1 miles away and priced at $31 a month. Each is described as offering 24/7 access, so either space can suit a driver who prioritizes a lower monthly price and does not need a covered garage. These Parksy choices are paid alternatives when free Madison parking is full or unsuitable.
Madison parking ticket amounts, payment, and challenges
Madison's parking-ticket service publishes a cost-per-violation schedule for City of Madison citations (parkingtickets.cityofmadison.com). The city's ticket information identifies parking violations and provides the official route for handling a citation, so an overstay should be dealt with through the city rather than treated as a normal parking charge.
Madison citation payment methods include contacting Court Services at 608-266-4170 to schedule a court date. Parking court is held Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. by appointment, giving a driver who wants to challenge a citation a defined court process (cityofmadison.com).
UW-Madison publishes separate citation amounts: a parking-meter violation is $30, a permit violation is $40, and parking in a general no-parking area is $40 (transportation.wisc.edu). Those amounts apply to UW-Madison citations, while City of Madison street tickets are handled through the city's parking-ticket service.
