Understanding Permit Categories in Rye
Rye offers several parking permit types tailored to different needs across the community. The most common is the resident parking permit, which allows you to park all day on or near your street without restrictions, provided your property sits on a street with timed parking. However, permits don't guarantee a space will always be available: demand can be high, especially near the Rye Foreshore during summer months.
Properties subdivided after August 31, 2011, such as newly built townhouses and apartments, are ineligible for permits. Similarly, commercial properties and short-term accommodation venues like hotels cannot apply. Each eligible property can hold up to two permits, though driveways or mixed-use dwellings may be limited to one. Understanding these restrictions helps you determine your eligibility before investing time in an application.
Additional Permit Options for Rye Residents
Beyond residential permits, Rye residents can access business permits, trade permits, visitor passes, and event permits. Local businesses benefit from dedicated permits, while tradespeople can apply for trade permits to park near job sites on streets like Point Nepean Road. Visitor permits are ideal for temporary guests, allowing them to park without facing timed restrictions. If you're hosting an event at venues such as the Rye Community Hall on Napier Street, you can obtain an event permit to ensure your guests have parking access.
The Mornington Peninsula Shire administers these permit categories with clear guidelines for each type. Short-stay visitor vouchers provide convenient solutions for accommodating friends and family without the stress of street hunting. Tradesperson day permits support service workers who need reliable parking while completing jobs.
