Understanding Burnaby's Permit Parking Categories
Burnaby offers several parking permit types designed to meet different needs across the city. Residential permits, business permits, trade permits, visitor permits, and event permits each serve specific purposes within Burnaby's 249,125-person community. The city strategically manages these permit parking zones to balance residential peace with commercial activity, particularly around high-traffic areas like Metropolis at Metrotown and Burnaby General Hospital.
Unlike some municipalities, Burnaby does not issue general Residential Parking Only permits citywide. However, limited residential permit options exist near critical locations such as Burnaby General Hospital, where demand consistently outpaces available street spaces. This targeted approach protects neighbourhood parking while accommodating hospital visitors, staff, and patients who need reliable access to nearby zones during peak hours and emergency situations.
Visitor and Business Permit Options
Visitor permits provide short-term solutions for guests staying with Burnaby residents. These visitor parking permits can be purchased online or at designated city locations, offering flexibility at rates as low as $9.71 per day through systems like BCIT External Permits. For businesses operating along corridors like Kingsway or in commercial zones, business parking permits ensure staff and clients can access services without disrupting the broader community.
Trade permits serve contractors, plumbers, electricians, and other service professionals who need reliable parking while working at multiple Burnaby addresses. Event parking regulations protect spaces at venues like Burnaby Lake Sports Complex and nearby community centres. Whether you need weekend guest accommodation or weekday business access, the city's tiered permit structure ensures every user type finds an appropriate solution within their budget.
