Car Storage in Yellowknife, NT: Indoor, Outdoor & Covered
What Are the Vehicle Storage Costs in Yellowknife?
In Yellowknife, storage costs can vary significantly based on the type of vehicle and the facility. At Containermart, for example, outdoor parking spaces are available for various vehicle sizes, making it essential to compare rates. Monthly rates for enclosed storage units may start at around $100, depending on the size and demand.
Why Street Parking Costs More Than You Think
Leaving your vehicle parked on Yellowknife streets might seem convenient, but it carries hidden expenses that add up fast. Winter temperatures drop below -30°C regularly, exposing cars to severe weather damage that leads to expensive mechanical repairs. Your vehicle's exterior suffers, battery performance drops, and fluid systems freeze: costs that easily exceed what proper storage would have prevented.
Beyond weather damage, vehicle theft remains a real concern around busy areas like Frame Lake and the Yellowknife Bay waterfront. The City of Yellowknife enforces strict parking regulations with fines ranging from $40 to $100 per violation. When you combine potential theft losses (often exceeding $1,000), weather damage, and accumulated fines, unprotected street parking becomes financially risky. Secure storage solutions actually save money over time.
Instead of stressing over mounting costs, consider dedicated storage facilities that protect your investment. Many Yellowknife residents discover that monthly storage fees are far cheaper than replacing a damaged engine or recovering a stolen vehicle. The peace of mind alone justifies the investment during our brutal winters.
Understanding Local Storage Facility Options
Long-term vehicle storage in Yellowknife ranges from budget-friendly to premium, depending on your needs and vehicle type. Containermart, located at 14 Coronation Drive, offers enclosed drive-up units starting around $100 per month for standard cars, with pricing scaling up for larger vehicles and covered bays. These facilities keep your car protected from harsh weather while remaining easily accessible whenever you need it.

Always compare covered versus outdoor parking options based on your budget and vehicle protection needs.
RV, Boat, and Specialty Vehicle Storage
Yellowknife's outdoor recreation culture means many residents need storage solutions for RVs, boats, and motorcycles beyond standard car parking. Containermart and similar local providers offer dedicated lots with rates starting around $190 monthly for RVs, varying based on vehicle size and indoor versus outdoor placement. Given our proximity to Great Slave Lake, boat storage demand peaks before and after summer seasons.
Before storing larger vehicles, prepare them properly by cleaning thoroughly and ensuring all systems run smoothly. RV owners should drain water lines, check tire pressure, and service fuel systems to prevent damage during extended storage periods. Winter vehicle preparation is critical in Yellowknife's climate: neglecting this step can result in thousands in repairs come spring. Specialized facilities understand these requirements and often provide guidance on proper winterization and storage procedures.
