Residential Permit Zones and Daily Restrictions
Chew Valley's residential streets operate under strict permit-based parking systems. Weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM require valid permits in designated zones. This protects local residents while managing heavy commuter traffic near Chew Valley Secondary School and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Each street has its own rules. Some areas near Chew Road allow all-day parking for permit holders, while others enforce time limits. Yellow line combinations indicate varying restriction periods. Always check the specific signage for your street before parking.
Vehicles without permits face a Penalty Charge Notice of up to £70. Somerset Council enforces these rules consistently across the valley. Report illegal parking directly to the council's enforcement team at 01823 219035. They respond quickly to complaints about obstruction or safety violations.
Obtaining and Displaying Your Parking Permit
Residents apply for permits through Somerset Council's parking department. Applications require proof of address and vehicle registration. Processing typically takes 5-10 working days. Permits cost around £65 annually per vehicle in most residential zones.
Display your permit clearly on your dashboard at all times. Enforcement officers use ANPR cameras and manual checks to verify compliance. Poor visibility or expired permits trigger immediate fines. Visitors can apply for temporary visitor permits (usually 10-day books for £15) through your local resident parking office.

Payment methods include coins, notes, and contactless cards at all machines. Visible parking tickets must remain on your dashboard throughout your stay. Missing or expired tickets result in £70 fines issued by patrolling Civil Enforcement Officers. Receipts serve as proof of payment if disputes arise.
Peak season (May to September) sees higher demand around tourist attractions and recreational areas. Arrive early or use nearby alternative streets if prime spots are taken. Overstaying by just five minutes can trigger enforcement action. Monitor your phone timer to ensure timely departure.
Understanding Time Limits and Loading Restrictions
Double yellow lines mean no parking or loading at any time. Single yellow lines restrict parking during marked hours (typically 9 AM-5 PM weekdays). Loading bays operate on strict schedules, usually 8 AM-1 PM for delivery vehicles only. Resident vehicles cannot use these spaces regardless of permit status.
Chew Valley's complex road marking system confuses many drivers. Time limits vary by street and season. Winter parking often becomes less restricted, while summer tourist season tightens enforcement around the lake area and Chew Magna village. Always photograph signage if unsure about regulations.

Civil Enforcement and Penalty Charge Notices
Somerset Council's Civil Enforcement Officers patrol Chew Valley streets daily. They focus on high-traffic areas near Chew Valley Secondary School, the hospital, and commercial zones on Chew Road. Their goal is maintaining road safety and preventing obstruction of emergency vehicles.
Enforcement uses modern technology including ANPR cameras and electronic chalking systems. These automatically detect unpermitted vehicles and logged violations. Restricted parking bays receive priority attention. Officers issue Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) within minutes of detecting violations. Appeals must be submitted within 28 days, though success rates remain low without genuine procedural errors.
Challenge notices only if you have solid grounds: incorrect signage, damaged permit display, or genuinely exempt circumstances. Paying PCNs within 14 days reduces the fine from £70 to £35. Ignoring notices escalates to debt recovery procedures. Contact the council's parking appeals team for guidance on legitimate challenges.
