Resolving Towing Disputes and Filing Complaints
Resolving a towing dispute requires patience and documentation. First, gather all evidence: photos of the location where you parked, signage that may have been unclear or missing, receipts from the towing company, and any written communications. Contact the towing company directly to request a detailed explanation of why your vehicle was removed. If their response is unsatisfactory, you can escalate the complaint to the Toronto Police Service or the City of Toronto Municipal Licensing and Standards division. Many disputes are resolved through these official channels within weeks.
Should you need to pursue formal compensation claims, consider consulting with a local paralegal or small claims court, where you can recover your towing and storage fees. Keep meticulous records of all expenses incurred, including the tow itself, storage charges, transportation costs to the impound lot, and any lost wages from time taken off work to resolve the issue. The key to success in these disputes is having clear documentation and understanding that Ontario law protects vehicle owners from unlawful towing practices. Many residents of The Beaches have successfully recovered their fees by following these steps and remaining persistent in their claims.
