The Medway Council manages numerous pay-and-display parking areas, especially around popular areas such as Chatham town centre and Rochester High Street. For example, on-street parking along High Street typically charges £1.50 per hour, while off-street car parks like the Pentagon Shopping Centre offer rates starting at £1.00 for the first hour, encouraging visitors to explore local shops and landmarks.

The cost of a resident parking permit can range from £30 to £50 annually, with additional charges for visitor permits. Local attractions such as the historic Rochester Castle and the Medway Maritime Museum often see an influx of visitors, making it essential to plan parking in advance to avoid any unexpected fees. Understanding the parking costs and rates in Medway can significantly enhance your experience while visiting this vibrant area.
Hospital and Short-Stay Parking Rates
In Medway, hospital parking costs are among the most frequently cited expenses. At Medway Maritime Hospital, charges start at £2.30 for up to two hours, climbing to £9.20 for a full 24-hour period. If you're attending regular treatments, the hospital offers reduced-rate options for patients and families. Those undergoing oncology treatments, for instance, can purchase a seven-day parking pass for just £16.10, which represents significant savings for frequent visitors.
Blue Badge holders enjoy free parking at the hospital, making access easier for those with mobility challenges. The dual car parks use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to streamline the payment process. Pay-and-Display Meters Across Town
Pay-and-display parking dominates Medway's town centres and residential areas. Standard tariffs hover around £1.50 per hour, with most meters now accepting contactless payments for speed and convenience. Near popular spots like Hoo Library, just 423 metres from Hoo Fort, you'll find reliable meter coverage that caters to short visits and quick errands.
The beauty of fixed-rate parking is predictability. Unlike surge pricing models, Medway's public meters charge consistent hourly rates, making budgeting straightforward for regular visitors. High Street locations around Rochester and Chatham offer dense meter networks, though peak times (weekends, school holidays) do see higher occupancy. Many drivers find these predictable costs preferable to the stress of hunting for spaces. For those seeking alternative solutions, our guide on Medway parking alternatives explores peer-to-peer options that might suit your needs.
Peak-Time Surges and Event Parking
Medway's parking landscape shifts dramatically during peak hours and local events. Around Medway Maritime Hospital, demand peaks during morning and afternoon clinic hours, intensifying pressure on available bays. The hospital car park regularly fills to capacity, forcing latecomers to hunt for overflow spaces or pay premium rates at nearby private facilities. During major events (whether at the Violette just 403 metres away or festivals near Hoo Fort) parking demand spikes unpredictably.
Understanding these patterns helps you plan smarter trips. Arriving 30 minutes earlier can mean the difference between a convenient £2.30 two-hour charge and a frustrating £9.20 full-day rate. Port-related activity near Werburgh also draws seasonal traffic surges. Predictable parking solutions become increasingly valuable during these busy periods. Medway Council's official parking guidance includes event-specific information to help residents navigate peak times effectively.
Private and Alternative Parking Options
Beyond traditional council car parks, Medway residents increasingly turn to private parking spaces for reliable, cost-effective solutions. Peer-to-peer platforms allow homeowners to rent unused driveways and forecourts, often undercutting hospital and town-centre rates. Many spaces start from £12 daily: competitive compared to the hospital's £9.20 maximum. These private options eliminate the anxiety of circling full car parks and missing appointments.
For commuters like Sarah from Chatham, monthly private arrangements cut costs dramatically. She transitioned from £400-plus monthly meter fees to £200 through a fixed private bay, freeing up both budget and peace of mind. The RAC's driving advice section includes comprehensive tips on evaluating parking expenses as part of overall motoring costs. Whether you're visiting Hoo Library, Violette, or commuting to Chatham station, exploring alternative parking options ensures you're not overspending on essential services.
Understanding Blue Badge and Resident Permits
Medway's Blue Badge scheme provides genuine relief for eligible drivers. Holders enjoy free parking at Medway Maritime Hospital and most council-controlled car parks across the borough, removing monthly expenses entirely. Residential permit schemes in areas like Rochester and Chatham offer another avenue: annual permits typically cost £60–£120, far cheaper than daily meter feeding. Permits target locals who park overnight on residential streets, protecting neighbourhoods from commuter overspill.
Eligibility varies: Blue Badge status requires mobility assessment, while resident permits need proof of address within designated zones. Both schemes represent significant savings for qualifying households. If you're managing chronic health conditions or mobility challenges, the free parking at Medway Maritime Hospital alone justifies exploring your options. For detailed eligibility criteria and application procedures, Medway Council's parking charges page outlines scheme specifics. Planning which scheme suits your circumstances prevents unnecessary expenditure on parking.
