National Park Parking Fees and Seasonal Rates
Pembrokeshire's parking landscape is shaped largely by the National Park Authority, which operates around 40 car parks across the region. Fourteen of these charge fees during the busy season from 1 March to 31 October. The pricing structure is straightforward: free parking for the first 30 minutes applies to all vehicles, then £1.50 for up to one hour, £4 for two hours, and £8 for a full day. Popular spots like Tenby and St Davids follow these rates consistently during peak tourist months.
For frequent visitors, the season ticket option at £140 provides excellent value across all charging car parks. This single ticket eliminates the hassle of paying daily rates and works out to roughly £11.67 per month if spread across the entire charging season. Local commuters and regular explorers find this investment worthwhile, especially when visiting attractions around Pembroke Castle or the coastal paths. Outside the March to October window, parking becomes completely free at these facilities, making winter visits particularly appealing for budget-conscious drivers. Check the National Park parking information for specific car park locations and availability.
Payment Methods and Digital Options
Pembrokeshire has modernised its parking payment infrastructure significantly. Most car parks now accept both traditional pay-and-display ticketsCash payments remain available at on-site machines for those who prefer them, though mobile coverage can be unreliable in some National Park areas. The flexibility means you're never locked into a single payment method, reducing frustration during your visit.
If you find yourself without mobile signal or prefer not to use apps, printed tickets from the on-site machines still work perfectly for securing your free 30-minute grace period. This low-tech option ensures nobody gets caught out by technology failures. Council-Managed Car Parks and Local Rates
Beyond the National Park Authority, Pembrokeshire County Council manages its own network of car parks in town centres like Haverfordwest, Fishguard, and Newtown. These facilities often have different charging structures than the National Park, with some offering discounted parking for residents and workers. Town centre car parks typically charge £1 to £3 for short stays, making them ideal for shopping trips or business visits. The council website provides detailed breakdowns of charges for each location, helping you plan your parking strategically.
Understanding where to park and how much it costs prevents the stress of circling streets searching for available bays. In Haverfordwest, for example, multi-storey facilities near the town centre offer predictable daily rates around £5, compared to street parking which varies. During busy market days or local events near Pembroke Castle, these managed car parks often fill quickly, so arriving early maximises your chances of securing a spot. The council also publishes notices about temporary parking restrictions, so checking ahead saves time and avoids potential penalties.
Season Tickets, Permits, and Long-Term Savings
Residents and regular workers in Pembrokeshire can access residential parking permits and discounted season tickets through the County Council. These permits typically cost £80 to £120 annually for on-street parking near your home, significantly cheaper than daily or hourly rates. Businesses also benefit from employer parking schemes that reduce the financial burden on staff commuting to offices in town centres. For those spending more than three days per week parking, a season ticket becomes economically sensible.
The mathematics of season tickets speak clearly: at £140 for the seven-month National Park charging season, you're paying roughly 60p per day for unlimited access to 14 premium car parks. Compare this to £8 daily rates, and the savings accumulate rapidly. Many families combine council permits with National Park season tickets to cover all their parking needs across Pembrokeshire.
