Parking Costs in Scarborough, ME: Hourly, Daily & Monthly Rates
What Are the Hourly Parking Rates in Scarborough, Maine?
In Scarborough, hourly parking rates can vary depending on the location. For instance, metered parking at popular beaches like Pine Point and Ferry Beach generally costs $2 per hour during the summer season, while some municipal lots may offer different rates based on demand.
Parking Near Scarborough
Scarborough, Maine, offers a variety of parking options that cater to both residents and visitors. The town has established parking rates to ensure efficient use of space, particularly around popular destinations such as Scarborough Beach and the Pine Point area. On-street parking is available along major roads like Route 1 and Pine Point Road, where rates typically range from $1.00 to $2.00 per hour, depending on the location and time of day. Additionally, the Scarborough Town Council oversees parking regulations, ensuring that spaces are adequately managed to accommodate the influx of tourists during peak seasons.
For those visiting the Scarborough Mall or local shopping centers, parking is generally free, but time limits may apply. The council has implemented a system of parking meters in high-traffic areas to encourage turnover and availability. Understanding the local parking costs and rates can greatly enhance your experience, enabling you to plan your visit effectively without any unexpected expenses. Keep in mind that special events, such as local festivals or beach days, may influence parking availability and pricing, so it's wise to check ahead before heading out.
Daily Beach Parking Rates in Scarborough
Scarborough's beaches command attention during summer, and so do their parking fees. Daily parking rates at Higgins Beach and Ferry Beach sit at $20, collected between 7:00 am and 5:30 pm. That's a solid chunk of your beach budget, especially if you're visiting multiple times weekly. The town operates these lots directly, so rates are transparent and predictable: no surprise surges.
Peak season runs May 1 through September 15, when demand for car spaces skyrockets. Beachgoers should arrive early to snag spots, particularly on weekends when families flood Scarborough's sandy shores. Understanding these timeframes helps you plan trips strategically and avoid overpaying during the busiest weeks.
Resident vs. Non-Resident Beach Pass Options
Scarborough residents enjoy a major financial advantage with the Resident Beach Pass, priced at just $40 for unlimited access to town-operated lots throughout the season. For families making weekly trips, this pass pays for itself in just two visits. Non-residents face steeper costs, with seasonal passes capped at $200, though availability is extremely limited.
As of April 2026, non-resident beach passes sold out entirely, highlighting how competitive parking access has become. The town prioritises locals, which makes sense given Scarborough's tight summer parking crunch. If you're planning a longer stay or frequent visits, securing a resident pass early is crucial. Check the Scarborough town beaches page for current availability and renewal deadlines.
Metered Parking on Bayview Avenue and Beyond
Hourly metered parking in Scarborough operates at a flat $5 per hour, particularly along Bayview Avenue where meters run from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm during peak season. That rate might seem reasonable for a single hour, but it compounds quickly: a three-hour beach day costs $15 on top of any other expenses. The town uses modern contactless payment terminals, so you can skip the hassle of carrying coins or hunting for change.
Beyond Bayview Avenue, metered spaces dot downtown Scarborough near local shops and restaurants. These meters enforce strict time limits, typically two or three hours maximum, which keeps turnover high and prevents all-day parking. Missing the metre deadline results in citations starting at $25, so set phone reminders if you're prone to losing track of time at the beach.
Smart Payment Methods and Technology Solutions
Scarborough has modernised its parking infrastructure with digital payment options that make transactions seamless. Gone are the days of scrambling for quarters. Most municipal lots now accept credit cards and mobile payments through contactless terminals. This shift reduces friction and lets you focus on enjoying the beach rather than wrestling with parking logistics.
For those seeking alternatives to traditional municipal parking, private peer-to-peer solutions have emerged as cost-effective options. Many locals now explore mixed strategies: resident passes for weekend beach trips, hourly metres for quick downtown visits, and private booking platforms for flexibility. Seasonal Demand and Cost Variations Throughout the Year
Parking costs in Scarborough fluctuate dramatically with seasons. Summer (May through September) brings peak pricing and fierce competition for car spaces at beaches and downtown lots. Winter months see dramatically lower demand, and some metered zones suspend enforcement entirely. This seasonal variation means strategic timing can save you hundreds annually.
Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day represents the absolute busiest window. Families, tourists, and locals all converge on Higgins Beach, Ferry Beach, and Pine Point simultaneously, creating gridlock and frustration. During these weeks, arriving before 9:00 am practically guarantees a spot: arriving after 11:00 am often means circling for 20+ minutes. Plan accordingly by using shoulder-season visits when possible or considering off-peak weekday trips.
